I think they made their name in tactical (as you thought - can be niche)
The short version is this light is designed not to produce any kind of arc or spark (or enough heat) to cause ignition in areas where there might be flamable gas or dust.

tl;dr version: This is a light for designed industrial use to keep you from blowing yourself up in flammable environments.

I think they made their name in tactical (as you thought - can be niche)
After a frustrating home project, I finally decided to research a good one. I ended up with a different Streamlight product (Bandit Pro [amazon.com]), and I love it. Definitely not for hiking, biking, or other situations where you need extended range or red/green light, but if you want a small amount of soft, even white light right in front of your face, it's the best solution I've found. Because it's so light, it's easily the most comfortable one I've tried.
Not the cheapest, but if fits my uses perfectly. I've since given/thrown away all my other ones.
