The available models are all equipped with Core i5-8500 (6-core, 6-thread) CPUs. These are capable CPUs that could make solid long-term productivity PCs (Excel, Word, browsing, Minecraft) and are supported for automatic upgrades to Windows 11.

The small form factor (SFF) boxes aren't as easy to hide away as the micro form factor (MFF) systems. However, there are more expansion options and the use of traditional desktop CPUs in SFF systems instead of the power optimized options more common in the MFF systems (so, for example, an i5-8500 vs. an i5-8500T) gives these desktops good upgrade options and potentially greater performance per dollar (in the example given between 10-20% more performance depending upon your application). The only downside is having lower efficiency. The i5-8500 could draw up to 65 watts to achieve its performance.

The comparable modern Alder Lake system might be an i3-N305. The i5-8500 likely provides greater performance in a number of workloads. However, to achieve its performance the i3-N305 would only sip 15 watts. Admittedly a fully equipped N305 system would likely be priced much higher than $200.

Good luck!

I have the 7060 with 8500 in a MT format. Solid CPU for gaming and productivity. It has 4 ram slots, so would recommend getting another 3 sticks of 8 [ebay.com] to bring it to 32GB.

Video cards I would recommend something like the RX550 [ebay.com] on a budget or A6400 if you have more cash.

Win11 compatible.

Can I replace the RAM with my own RAM? Or is it stuck with DELL's RAM? I have a 32G RAM, but I am not sure it supports single-slot 32G RAM.

You can use RAM manufacturer websites to get a list of compatible modules:
https://www.crucial.com/compatibl...x-7060-sff

If you have existing RAM sticks, note that they probably will NOT work because these SFF machines typically use low-voltage (1.2V) RAM compared to the more common 1.5V.

I think the i8500t MFF for $110 recently was a little better deal, which I got one from (should have got a couple more). This one does have an SSD already so saves on a $20 upgrade. I8500 is a little more powerful too. I might get one or two because I need to upgrade some office workstations to w11 compatible PCs, they are browser/word workstations some using dual 1080p monitors -these should be plenty adequate for a number of years.
This is the cheapest I have seen the SFF i8500

I'm thinking of using something like this to run UnRaid on bare metal with a couple of dockers. very tempted to jump on this.

I'm currently running a Xeon E3-1225 Poweredge T20 as a Plex server, backup, download machine, etc. Runs 24/7, works great. It has about 10TB of storage among 2 internal HDDs and one external. It's running Server 2012 on a 64GB SSD, so badly needs an upgrade that would require a larger SSD and a retail copy of Windows 10, which would likely exceed this price. This i5 outperforms the old Xeon. Would this be a good budget server replacement, or is there a better alternative? I need something that can do a bit more than a NAS, but I don't want to spend much. Thx.

Just look on EBay for the Intel NICs. They are cheap and easy to find.

This should work fine for that. My server is a 10th Gen i3 which is similar to this performance wise. I am running proxmox with plex, file share via samba lxc, omada controller on lxc, homeseer and blueiris on w10 vm.
For lots of cameras blueiris is too much for it, have to turn frame rates down. The Linux stuff is not very demanding on the server. Plex if using direct play will be fine, I am not sure how this PC will do with high res on the fly transcoding -mine cannot do 4k transcoding but direct play 4k works perfectly.

The SFF makes it tight for hard drives, I have a similar size Asus and have getto rigged an extra 3.5" drive into the case. I have 2 nvme (1 on pcie adapter) and 2 3.5" drives in mine. Larger case would be nice for multiple drives for NAS like use.

Would this be a good option to stream Plex? And maybe use connected to the TV directly to stream stuff?
