Yep, agreed, Been to Maui three times. Found locals ruder and less welcoming every time. Most people there don't understand that tourism is the *only* industry Hawaii has, and want all tourists off of their island. I have a friend from Maui, and even he doesn't understand the reality. He says stuff like "only hotel and restaurant owners want tourists. The rest of us get government assistance from the state, we so don't care about tourists". I'm not sure where he thinks Hawaii government gets the money, but I don't argue with him.

One of the prettiest parts of Maui is the Road to Hana. It's almost impossible to drive now. Almost every single pull-out now has a "no parking" sign and the fines are enforced, so you can't stop and snap a picture of those beautiful waterfalls (well, you can, but now you risk a fine). I also had multiple locals take the trouble to stop, open their truck window and scream "Get off the road you f-ing a-hole". I wasn't *in* the road. I was on the side of the road where they could pass by easily, yet they still felt the need to do what they did. I heard them curse out other people, and even children multiple times.

If you don't believe me, read the "Maui Revealed" book, which is the most popular guidebook on Maui (https://www.amazon.com/Maui-Revea...141&sr=8-1).

In it, the authors freely admit that the locals "forgot the spirit of Aloha, especially on the Road to Hana".

After the last trip and being cursed out by locals several times, my wife and I decided "never again". We still go to Oahu, which is the Gathering Place and is a lot more welcoming to tourists. But Maui is not for us. It's a beautiful island, but honestly the fire damage is nothing compared the hostility of many (not all, but many) locals.

Exactly!! with all those problems at BM this year, it is still less headache, cheaper and easier than this 'wonderful' maui gig.

I'm still in Hawaii for the first time and I feel I had enough Hawaii for this life time already. It's like New Zealand but everything is more expensive, especially the hotels are like 2 to 3 times more expensive. Volcanoes are the only reason to visit here.

Maui is proably at least double the cost of what it was 3 years ago. The flight is the least expensive part.

I might go back again in a year or so, I just want to visit the ocean and snorkel/scuba there again.

I'm making a quick 24 hour trip to Maui next weekend.

A friend shared a post on her IG for a Maui nonprofit wanting toy donations, and gathered a bunch for them... but turns out, shipping the 2-3 boxes would've cost $100-150 each.

I needed to do a United Premier qualifying run (the stupid 4 flights with United rule) so decided to book a RT flight, around the same price as what is posted in this deal. Will be able to check my luggage for free.

either way, if you do go, just don't be an insensitive prick. the best you can do is be a traveler that brings good to those that need it.

I live in Lahaina. I speak for everyone in Lahaina when I say, we don't want you here in Lahaina. The hotels might want you back but the locals don't. Go to Kihei, Kahului, Wailuku, Hana, Kula, but stay out of Lahaina while we recover.

The main issue currently is that residents whose homes were burned down are currently occupying hotel rooms/air bnb in Kanapalii and other parts. This I believe is paid for by the govt(maybe some private). If they encourage tourism to open up again and tourist to stay in Kanapalii then those residents will be without a place to live or at the very least they have to move again. This is one of the primary reasons why the return of tourism isn't encouraged by some residents. Also that and the tour operators choose to have snorkeling tours off lahaina area a day after the fire so there is a sense that most tourism businesses don't care about the community and will sell the tragedy whenever they can.

I went to the town of Lahaina and Kaanapali Beach 1 day out of the 7 days I was there. Lahaina was on the Dry Side, with all the tourists that sit at the beach all day. Road to Hana is where all the beauty is at along with Iao Valley.

I would visit Maui just to do the entirety of the Road to Hana again.

Gardens, rivers, taro plantations, rainbow eucalyptus trees, yummy banana bread stands, black sand beaches, waterfalls, short scenic hikes, lush vegetation everywhere, and amazing pools/swimming holes. One of the best days I've had on vacation!

I paid $20 for a GPS enabled app that narrated the journey and it was worth it!
