Upon closer look you're right it's not a hex extension. For those looking for a hex extension here's a 6" one for $3.71

I have six of these and they are definitely hex in the shank, but are round at the coupling sleeve with two beefy set screws which tightly connect a hex shank. They have been amazing at running speaker cables in floor joists and wall studs alike. I have literally made a six-footer out of six of them, which requires careful alignment and levelling and the judicious use of an inspection camera, but allows wire installation without removing the drywall...

The set screw ensures that a hex bit doesn't slip out. If you have a cutout in a 16" spaced void, you can fairly easily install a 12" section, tighten the set screw, add another, etc.

With only one of these, it makes for a decent installer bit as long as the spade bit is larger than the diameter of the sleeve.

Decent price, as I paid $7.45 for it back in July.
The title may be misleading to some, as this extension works with any 1/4" hex shank bit, such as the Irwin wood bits that were on the front page for quite awhile in June/July.

What is this? Is this like a drill extension?

Very odd that it's a hex extension but on the remote end it's circular with a set screw. Seems like there's a lot of potential for stripping there as more than a few of the reviews indicate.

It's a 1/4 hex extension with retaining screws so you don't lose the bit in a wall or something.

Yeah, I found it odd, even did a sort of reviews by date just in case it was an artifact from older reviews from a previous product. No dice, it's not hex which would significantly compromise the amount of torque you'd get out of it. My guess is on a longer extension of this type the material that it's made out of isn't strong enough to withstand the torque that would be applied by an impact tool.
