One difference is the battery type, Lithium-ion on the river pro, so only like 800 charges. Vs LiFePO4 and over 2000 charges.

Still learning about these things slowly - why are they calling this a "solar generator?" From the post title l thought this was a power station and solar panel combo (& at 700W, a surprisingly powerful one at that) for a dirt cheap price, and was gonna jump all over it until I didn't see a solar panel anywhere.

because people are idiots. You are absolutely right, these should be called Power Stations. Yes, you can attach a solar panel to it, but it still does not 'generate' the power but simply stores it.

How does this compare to Pecron has PECRON E600LFP 1200W 614Wh LiFePo4 Portable Power Station for $299.

Compared to the 72, this deal is $10 more but has 1200W rated vs 700W. But had 100Wh less power. Personally I'd take the 716Wh based on my use but you / others may need higher rated output

Agree. Bluetti stuff is good enough for the money, especially when it's on sale. As a DIY hobbyist, you can definitely build something similar, but you will spend way more if you want quality battery, quality BMS, and a quality MPPT. Not to mention, your build may end up much bigger and heavier, and not look as nice as the Bluetti one. 😅
Modular is always going to cost more but that's because everything isn't built on likely a single board. The components are upgradable and swappable.

Perhaps people have tested, but I'm suspicious about these units having true mppt as every unit makes that claim no matter how cheap they are. There are "cheater versions" of mppt which isn't true mppt.

But I can't argue with your point of cost. It's hard to even buy the quantity of name brand batteries competitively. That is why the unit I built is thus far still on SLA. But it still functions 4 years later..

Not that you were answering me; but fair point on the overall watt-hrs vs highest wattage output. A review claiming to have run a Kuerig coffee maker on the Pecron pushed me that direction....I know my E3BA won't do that for sure! Overall watt hrs= overall usage time obviously; but for that example of a use case (or a 30" big pusher fan out by my sawmill), I figure the 1200 handles more startup load, and therefore more versatile for high-draw items.

That being said, I've had zero issues with my smaller Bluetti (which came with the conversion cable for my solar panel, which seemd like a bonus)..... whereas the Pecron is a completely unknown brand or entity to me. Hopefully someone with an ownership direct comparison can chime in!

Think harder. How does a gas generator work? Fuels are not energy source but mere energy storage, mostly made from solar energy from the sun via photosynthesis over quite a number of years. (Well, save for the discussions whether fusion fuel are themselves storage vs source)

For gas generator:
turning an energy storage medium (fossil fuel) -> electricity
For solar generaor:
turning an energy storage medium (charged up battery) -> electricity

Makes sense?
No. It doesn't make sense. Because gas generators don't require additional hardware to convert gas to electricity. If a solar panel was included, "solar generator" would be an apt description. But it's not.

Can I add a surge protector to this and run additional devices like 5g modem and wifi router and laptop all on the same outlet?
