Tried it on i7 didn't work, wonder if the difference going from it to i7 or 16gb to 32gb is worth it. Mostly tons of Excel and chrome. Thoughts?

Edit: strangely I added i5 to cart and applied code and it worked. Ended up going with i7 since it had backlit keyboard, i7, 32gb ram, 512gb hard drive. Probably overkill but it's not too expensive. Hoping it all works out. $305. Thanks!

Most mortals cannot make use of 32GB unless you want to run a ton of VMs locally which I suspect not based on what you wrote for excel and chrome.

If you run excel that hits the row limit of a million. I've never seen an excel used by mere mortals exceeds 16GB limit though.

Chrome now has a memory preservation feature to deactivate tabs when not in use to cut down on memory hogging too.

The code worked on a i7 CPU with 32GB of memory in "A" condition. That said, you'll probably benefit from the i7 extra threads for excel usage, but it's probably 5-8% different in performance max. Between 16GB and 32GB, you likely won't notice any performance improvements unless you're doing some insane number crunching in Excel, but you'd kill the processor before the memory became an issue.

However, you're already looking at something close to +$300, you can occasionally find newer laptops for around $350-400 that are using the latest processors that offer anywhere from 30-45% faster CPUs. Costco had a sale on an HP 14" i3-1315U, 1080P, 8GB RAM, 512GB SSD for $350 last month just as an example. So just know what you're getting inline with expectations that these are off-lease machines.

What you said about $350-$400 new laptops make sense. I bought refurbished Latitude 7400 with 8th gen i5 CPU for $220 plus tax a month ago. I bought 32G RAM for $50 and a new SSD for $50. The total cost is exactly between $350-$400.
And the two USB ports constantly disconnect. I am using the USB C port with a hub for now.

Are these i7s old that they don't compare to a current i3?

This guy feels my pain. I'm constantly getting bogged down so I don't know if it's the processor or the ram, how do I open 20 different excel with 50-60 tabs of chrome and then get on a zoom call?

So 13th Gen laptop would be 30-40% faster? Might as well cancel the latitude, it was 306

A spinning hard drive or even a SATA SSD can bog things down pretty quickly. Swapped the SATA SSD in my i3-10xx desktop for a NVME SSD and it's like a new machine.

Probably about comparable in overall performance to a current generation i3. Personally, I would avoid these refurbished Dell's. These are 3 year old machines that should be described as "used" instead of refurbished.

Just bought a refurbished laptop from dell. Ownership is still assigned to the previous company. Dell rep told me to fill up a transfer of ownership, but not sure how this thing works. Other than that, laptop is in great shape.

Depending on the CPU it can be greater a much greater improvement over 30-40%, but generally in the $350-400 compared to most Intel i5/i7 10th generation chip, an Intel i3/i5 13th generation will be a significant improvement.

To be fair to this deal, most of these Dell Latitude (and Precision) laptops are built to take abuse, more so than consumer line laptops. I have used older Latitude E7420 (2014), E7440 (2014) and Precision 5520 (2017), 5530 (2018), 5540 (2019), and they're built well. The slightly newer Latitude 7410 (2020) has a trackpad that I despise, but otherwise built well. So generally these business/enterprise line of laptops are built well, but value for dollar I feel like these refurbish devices are best under $200 mark. Once you start to creep past $300, you might as well save up for something better.

Again, if you can wait for a sale at Costco or other retailer you can snag some faster devices. If you simply want a workhorse and don't care that it is slower, these Latitude laptops are still decent for what they are.
