Vise Grip style locking pliers usually have serrated jaws, though. Not the best to use, with high pressure, on a 5 - 10 year old rubber automotive hose.

Dang was excited to snag a pair but typical SD fashion I forgot I paid $13.98 for them in January of last year.

Just FYI, some reports of the clamping mechanism slipping... I've not used so cannot attest to this complaint...

This is probably for those tiny bypass coolant lines

I own these and they do slip making them useless.

I own these and they work great. I've used them 20 times or so and they've never slipped under tension. Locking pliers tend to pinch unevenly, (even with heater hoses pushed on the ends for jaw protection) and leak at the handle end. These pinch evenly all the way across the hose, which makes a difference on larger ones.

Hopefully everyone doing this has rubber jaw protectors or wrap them with duct tape, if the hose can't handle a simple pinch off with locking pliers then it's time to change out that hose.

User error. The hose slips out if you don't center it in the jaws. Long nose vise grips work and are super quick and easy, but run the risk of damaging the hose, so I don't mind taking the extra second to get these lined up properly.

Regular average price is $23, been a lot lower than $17 in the recent past. Pass.
