Keep in mind that mechanical drives are far more reliable and shelf safe than solid state.

You can easily shelve a mechanical drive for 10 years and still retrieve data from it. Whereas, a never powered SSD will likely have data retention issues well before that.

As for how much storage someone needs, consider incremental backups from multiple systems or backups of physical discs.

The average 4K BluRay is between 50-100GB to backup without conversion, for example. It adds up quick if you're a data hoarder.

However, a backup isn't a backup without some redundancy of its own. So if you're going to use a 14TB drive for backups, you should have at least that somewhere else as a secondary backup.

Because the one thing they'd do if they were not trying to hide anything is zero out the SMART data.

Had a good experience with them. Bought two HDs, one of them had some slow sectors but no bad ones, they exchanged one for me without any questions.

What software is best to test the HDs? SeaTools?

Wow that's a great price.....but you are rolling those dice twice. Once for Seagate, and another for being refurbished. I don't like those odds.

Refurbished Seagate Exos X16 14TB for $128 without tax from Server Part Deals seems a better deal, if you don't mind 2 v.s. 5 years warranty.

I just used the Hard Drive Sentinel Pro to test it. It's just a monitoring software but it seems the seller used the same software to advertise their products on Amazon. Maybe that's why they didn't say anything when I sent the results with my requestWink

storage /raid only imo

Anything else, OS and applications you are better with a MVNe or a SSD. In my case I'm training big models in M/L and I need the space and redundancy in case one drive fails I dont want to loose my work

The drive in the picture looks absolutely ancient. How did they even manage to find a drive that's so beaten up. It looks like a dog toy that's been played with it for years.

Lol.
Can you recommend something in 6-8tb range.

All the posts are about 14 tb which is too much for me.

Usually, I purchase directly from Server Part Deals, but want to try this seller.
I don't know how the 5-yr warranty will work, but let's see...
Ive purchased from them before and I had an issue with a drive and they were happy to replace it. Turned out it was a bad cable so I never sent it in.

Is there a way to check after receiving?
Unlikely since they zeroed out the SMART data. The most they might do to refurb is run a data scrubbing program. But I wouldn't count on that.
