I suggest you look at all the firmware updates for both brands. Onkyo has been much more supportive than denon over the same period. Also, the denon products are more expensive to start, and you have to add upcharges for their app or software licenses for their other products.

the bankruptcy was a result of onkyo selling of their assets. since they no longer owned any assets, they dissolved the old holding company. nothing more than a legal filing. a lot of people make that same incorrect assumption since they don't know the correct history.

Onkyo was sold to voxx (they own Klipsch, jamo and other brands including the onkyo sister brand pioneer). Backed by a much more stable company now, their support has stepped up dramatically with several firmware updates issued for their newer models.

This is pretty much an Onkyo under the Pioneer label. Not a fan of the cheap clip binding posts for the speakers except the front 2. 4 ohm compatible a plus for amp quality. Price is right, though future support from Onkyo is in question.

No mic, no like. Wink

I'm sure it's OK, but I would want a mic to be included for speaker setup and this one doesn't seem to have one.

Onkyo filed for bankruptcy in 2022 following takeover by PAC and Sharp. Support, quality, and consistency questions still exist with this unstable history, IMO. It remains to be seen. But my next receiver will likely be a Denon in this price range.

Nice, and thanks for the correction. I thought I searched for that.

Looks like it has ARC, but not EARC per the back of the unit and Amazon's Q&A.

Side note: I want to upgrade, but my ~2007 non-HDMI Yamaha just won't die. With streamers like Apple TV and MAX supporting the old Dolby Digital (non-"plus") format over SPDIF, and $20 ONN devices supposedly supporting DD+ to DD transcoding, I'll keep waiting.

It's always a difficult call when to upgrade. Since your working setup (with some additions) meets your needs then no point for you to upgrade now.

Fairly similar. Denon has 10w more power (doubt anyone could pick that out in an A/B comparison) and more inputs. If you need more inputs then the $100 difference may be worth it. Don't forget to add in the upcharge if you want to use the audyssey app.

Thanks for the reply. Just noticed this only has ARC vs eARC for the S970. I wonder if the compression is noticable.

I was in your boat with thinking that digital output was enough, until tonight that is. I bought an old Denon that has HDMI ARC (and my TV already did). I am blown away, and simultaneously disgusted that I was accepting listening to what I thought was acceptable surround sound. The sound quality difference is so starkly different that I immediately decided I was okay downgrading from 4k video to 1080p (because my receiver doesn't have 4k). The difference in audio is far better than that difference in picture. I suppose your results may vary, especially if your speakers are low quality to begin with.
