The problem is that most people have bowls or containers that won't fit neatly till the edge. And so there is always some space wasted near the side walls where nothing can fit. On a side-by-side the width of each shelf is so narrow, quite a lot of space gets wasted. Practically this means that even though the fridge may have the same volume, the number of items you can fit into the fridge is significantly reduced.
As a hypothetical example to convey via math - Case A you have 10 shelves, each being 30" wide. All your bowls are 8" wide. You can fit only 3 bowls side by side on each shelf. That makes it a total of 30 bowls from top to bottom. In case B you have 5 shelves which are 60" wide. Now you'll fit 7 bowls on each shelf. That makes it a total 35 bowls. Despite volume available being the same in each case, Case B can fit more stuff.
Of course, this was just a hypothetical example to illustrate my point. In actual use you'll always find some small item to fit on the sides. But the point is that we find that we have to do space management a lot more often on a fridge with narrower shelves, than what we needed to do on a regular wide fridge. We are pretty sure when we replace this fridge it won't be a side-by-side.
Guess what I'm saying is that each design has its pro and cons. The pros of the side by side were well put in an earlier post. I'm just pointing out the con. You have to consider what works best for you.

If my dishwasher goes I'll probably get a Bosch or something but other than that I get some twisted satisfaction after hearing someone's Kenmore/Samsung/LG broke down again. All anecdotal I know but after going through about 5 homes and never having to replace a whirpool/Amana appliance or needing expensive fixes, hope the positive streak continues.
Yes they do. Regularly.
You are one of the few smart ones.
This Fridge is a dumb purchase for majority of kitchens. protruding 13" beyond the cabinets just looks lame.
Dimensions - w/ hinges, handles & door (WxDxH)36 in. x 34.88 in. x 69 in
Dimensions - w/ door open 90° (WxDxH)36 in. x 51.13 in. x 69 in.
Dings, scratches and more.

Oh I forgot to add that my 15-year old Frigidaire side-by-side is in the garage for the past 2 years and working great. Too bad it's ugly or else I'd put it back in the kitchen.
