I got a similar sharpener with 400/1000 grit but have no instructions. Just trying to use it on a 420 steel folder, is it going to be lack of skill on my part, the steel or maybe I just need to spend a lot more time? What's a reasonable amount of time?

Thanks! My Lowe's had the OP one for $6.97 and the Standard Sharpening system for $11 (reg $30). I picked up the standard for the included angle guides

As a suggestion, it can be difficult to see where you are actually taking metal away, especially if you are trying to reshape the edge or even just sharpen it. Take a sharpie and blacken the edge where you intend to take metal off (sharpen) where you take metal away it will turn shiny again, where you haven't remains black. Watch some knife sharpening videos on youtube for ways to hold the knife and sharpener in a consistent manner. Good luck with your sharpening, I hope my suggestions help a bit.

Thanks, I guess a little patience is also called for. Total noob but figured it's time I learned to do it properly and not just use the cheap pull through sharpeners with cheap knives.
