By then you're looking at $50 and no sub I'd go for the Klipsch Promedia set for $50 when on sale. It'd be vastly superior to these speakers.

You really think so? The echo dots (older gen) I have have much better sound than I've ever seen out of a computer speaker setup like that one you're referring to.

That said, it's also been a really long time since I've used one. Have they gotten better?
I ordered the Klipsch Promedia 2.1 Refurb last week for $89 to connect to a tablet to play movies as I work from home. I am super impressed with the quality of the audio. There's a 3.5mm aux input on the right speaker. I have yet to do so, but I am going to connect my work laptop to it for when I have to do training.

From where? Not sure when the other person saw it for $50.

I mean, my dots are only used for music and asking the weather/traffic. I have clocks on enough devices that I don't need more.
Great, welcome to the 10%! Big Grin

These devices are pretty much marketed as clock radio replacements wrt functionality (a device sized for bedside table, 'wake up' and music being one of its primary functions.)

Of course they do more, but again, if my theory is correct, vast majority use them as such.

Maybe a better way to put it: I suspect the largest used location by far for these is 'bedside table/nightstand'.

This is probably also a generational thing: for people above maybe 30-35 YO, a clock radio and/or alarm clock with an always on time showing was a staple of every bedroom.

Younger than that probably grew up using their smart phones as their alarm.

My use case, like someone else above, is for a 12 YO's bedroom to wake him up. I don't let him go to sleep with his phone in his room, so this is a great stand-in for that.

Promedia which I have is a massive typical 3 speaker setup and the Dot is a very small footprint, so form factor vs. footprint is the consideration.

Thanks. Most probably the person who mentioned $50 must be talking about 2.0 model.

Anyone have a link for how to snip or desolder the microphones? Or maybe instructions on how to inject a continuous audio stream along the lines of "I'm coming to get you Mr Bezos"? Asking for a friend.

Random thing recently noticed:

We have a single 5th gen Dot and I recently discovered that the past few times our internet was out it was the only one that would still turn things on and off with our Kasa ecosystem. We have a 2nd gen Show and four other 4th Gen dots. The rest just tell me there is and internet issue and to power cycle my router.
Is it possible your 5th gen Dot picked up Internet from a Neighbor with Amazon Sidewalk enabled (the default)?

I think you might have amazon neighbors on. It's where it creates a mesh network with other amazon products so they can still connect. They don't have to be in your home so they are probably working off a neighbors device that has this setting on as well

Is it connected via thread? The new Kasa plugs (and maybe switches) support thread.

Has anyone tried ordering a bundle and returning just the plug? With a credit for an older model trade in, if you can do this, the echo should be about $12 so a net of about $7 after trade. It looks like the 20% off for the trade in doesn't seem to be working and only the $5 credit for the device.

I know the Kasas remember a schedule and during a network outage will still turn off/on as scheduled.

In terms of the Internet being out and Alexa controlling kasa devices I'm not sure how this would be possible since the "skill" integration between Alexa and tp-link would need to be initiated via the Internet. Are you sure this controlled your devices during an outage?
I've find the same thing, turns my tplink smart plug on and off when Internet is out. I was surprised when it happened.
