Not *in* two car fires but driving by and assisted. Five pounder was used in engine bay that was already open - I'm not sure what they did but maybe trying to jumpstart - was a bad snowy day. There was actually a third fire in American Legion parking lot. I was on bicycle, ran inside and grabbed their 10lb outside kitchen doors - popped the hood and sprayed thru gap between hood and body, a little thru the grille but radiator mostly blocked it. Too hot to release the catch to open but it did the job. Every commercial building has extinguishers so if at all close, run in and steal theirs.

A bit small to deal with any significant fuel fire but the chems are the same. I keep a 10 and a 5lb in each vehicle. Have used one of each over the years. Anything is better than nothing.

The link, in the OP, shows that my local Home Depot store has none in stock; however, the link that I just posted, shows that my local store has 50 in stock. So, hopefully, this is a helpful link.

By the way, thank you very much, OP, for posting this deal and bringing attention to it. This would seem to be a great item to have, for all of us. And for $13, it's something that is realistically affordable, for almost everyone.

At BJ's these are 2 for $24. Is the model at HD the same/similar? Or different enough to be worth having around?

These are much more effective on a dep seated "trash" fire (thus the A rating), but also much more corrosive. Also larger capacity (2.5 lb vs 2). These arguably would be a better "general use" home fire extinguisher, but I would definitely NOT use them on a car/boat/etc as they will wreck electronics to a much greater degree than the sodium bicarb unit in the OP.

Although many fire stations used to refill/recharge these, I don't know that it's really that much of a thing anymore (especially since that concept is foreign to many), so I'm thinking there's not much value in having an extinguisher that's NOT "single use", so in other words, probably not worth paying more for a rechargeable unit when basically no one is going to do that, they're just going to toss it out.

They don't make rechargeable units this size because they have to be hydrostatically tested to be usable any longer than the 12 years they say these are good for. Foam waters which maybe some places could have been refilled by the fire department back in the day require it every 5 years and are not safe for electrical fires. The hydro and refill for either size is only economical if you're talking about 10# plus commercial units. The last customer who's extinguishers I dealt with regularly recycled 1/3 of their inventory a year in years 10/11/12 and then replaced them as they got 12 years old from then on due to the cost. A few failed hydros and they were spending more on maintenance with replacements than to just replace them all.

Keep in mind the 1A will also be a phosphate extinguisher that will do damage to sensitive electronics etc, Sams also sells a 2 pack with 1 kitchen 1 general use where the kitchen is a sodium bicarb that is much safer for use on electronic type stuff but won't be effective against general paper/wood/trash fire.

Those weights are irrelevant, that's the weight of the product (and probably the product packaged at walmart) arguably the only thing that matters is the rating, which is the same 5BC for both units, but I'd bet both extinguishers have the same 2# of agent in them, and it's the same agent, so that would almost certainly be the case based on the identical rating.

FYI Kidde fire extinguishers has a recall not long ago. Not sure if it was ever resolved. I went with First Alert instead.

They generally work fine to pretty extreme temps as it's just a dust blown out by a propellant.
