Not *in* two car fires but driving by and assisted. Five pounder was used in engine bay that was already open - I'm not sure what they did but maybe trying to jumpstart - was a bad snowy day. There was actually a third fire in American Legion parking lot. I was on bicycle, ran inside and grabbed their 10lb outside kitchen doors - popped the hood and sprayed thru gap between hood and body, a little thru the grille but radiator mostly blocked it. Too hot to release the catch to open but it did the job. Every commercial building has extinguishers so if at all close, run in and steal theirs.

A bit small to deal with any significant fuel fire but the chems are the same. I keep a 10 and a 5lb in each vehicle. Have used one of each over the years. Anything is better than nothing.

Maybe I'm thinking about it incorrectly, but I keep ABC extinguishers (First Alert FE1A10GR) in both my home and vehicle.

The way I see it is: I could encounter any kind of fire while driving/out. Just because I'm keeping an extinguisher in my vehicle doesn't mean it's only for vehicle fires. A camp fire could get a little too big or a tent or other gear could catch. As I understand it, ABC dry chemical types can be used for those scenarios while still being safe for vehicle fires and other situations with electronics. So getting one that is appropriate for all situations is the best option, and 1-A:10-B:C is a decent balance of capability and portability/easy storage.

Am I wrong here?

ABCs work great, but the residue from most of them will be a strong acidic. If it's not flushed extensively with a ton of water it will corrode everything its left on for any significant amount of time. If your engine is on fire and you nail it with one and then the fire department comes and waters it down its probably ok, but if something catches fire inside the car and you blast it your car could well end up being ruined by the gunk it leaves behind. B/C are slightly alkaline but they're much less harmful to "stuff".

FWIW you never want to release the latch anyway, opening the hood adds oxygen, pop it up, stuff the nozzle in nearest the fire if you can tell where its coming from and unload.

Apparently there has been one death from the recalled models. Just contacted them yesterday and they agreed to replace a unit bought in the mid-nineties.

Not really. Same type and rating just a little different size bottle. Ones shorter and fatter other is taller and skinny

When I had a brush fire next to my house I used five fire extinguishers on it. The only one that failed was the one that was not expired. They don't go bad after five years, they become spares. Keep the old ones around unless they actually lose pressure and become useless.
