Look into Marriotts best rate guarantee. If it's truly a lower price for the same rate, Marriott will match the rate and give you an additional 25% discount or 5,000 points (your choice which one).

Dang, I already booked hotels for my next trip on Costco Visa (3% travel cb). Gotta go through and see if any of these offers apply to my bookings and swap method of payment. Some don't charge until you get on site. The cb here would be higher than 3%, but it needs to align.

Booking directly through the hotel's own website is dumb. They're much more expensive than using kayak or expedia or priceline. As an example, just chose the Mariott Monterey California. For the same dates, same room, total on the Marroitt website is $352. Total on Priceline is $265. That just about covers the entire $100 discount right there. So what discount is there exactly?

Tips:

These hotels chains are exponentially better in Asia. Example would be Kimpton hotels in Thailand in particular were some of the best experiences i've had thus far (and they are new).

I used to track all these promotions and going on so many trips and buying stuff. It was good! But it is really hard to do any more considering very high cost of living these days and no free time! As I remember the pricing on hotel websites were significantly higher than third party websites. So not sure if this is a good offer. Just check third party websites before going the hotel website which I think is required for this promo

So you actually have to complete the stay by that time or just book it? Credit card doesn't charge until actual hotel stay?

I'm pretty sure they won't discount all the way. I use Priceline's "hidden" Express Deals. It's pretty simple to find out which hidden hotel is which on Priceline. Tack on the 10-15% coupons they have on express deals on a regular basis and you have something that's at least 30% off the rate you can get from marriott.com or hilton.com, etc.

This is true. I recently stayed 5 nights at a Millennium hotel for a $428 thanks to Priceline express deals (plus a coupon).

That said, if u find a good rate directly from the hotelier, you should take it. We stayed at a Hilton, and a manager was at the front desk training someone. She pointed out that we were Hilton Honors members, booked directly, and paid with the Hilton credit card … so she was giving us a complimentary upgrade to a suite.

Those upgrades are awesome. And sometimes vouchers for breakfast or at least for the Starbucks onsite. If you have a premium credit card (like Amex Platinum), you are automatically upgraded to Gold level Bonvoy and Hilton. So I don't have to book through the hotel website to keep the status. I can get a dirt cheap rate (on Priceline Express) and still get the benefits of the status.

Cheers!

With employer discount rates option, I too see lower prices in other sites. However in some situation you can see the pricing was lower in marriott itself !!!!!
