I tried disassembling it at the time and there was no noticable problem with it that I could tell. It's a super simple mechanism, basically a cylinder with an o-ring and a bunch of grease inside. There had to be a check valve in there somewhere but I couldn't figure it out and just chucked it in the garbage.
Lesson learned: Test everything before you plan to use it in the woods.
