Bought a rain jacket from NF outlet but was disappointed with it performance. A bit skeptical now with NF. This was my first purchase. How do they rank among Patagonia, arcteryx, etc.

Generally it's acknowledged that their Summit Series line is top notch outdoor gear while the rest of it is essentially a fashion label. Their stuff will still keep you warm and keep the rain off you but there's a big markup for the label and aesthetics compared to functionality. Nothing wrong with that and applies to all brands as well.
