You're not supposed to be able to kill the mounted enemy after the training grounds immediately. It's there to teach you (the hard way) that sometimes it's better to avoid things.

I'm still trying to gather the courage to play this game.

Same here. I bought it about 2 months ago and finally worked up the courage to try it a few weeks back. I've been gaming all my life and while I don't just seek out difficult games, I've played my fair share but I couldn't get into Elden Ring. I was at work and dead tired which probably didn't help but I couldnt get a grasp of the systems in the game and Id get my rearend handed to me. Thinking about it, I'm ashamed to say that I had issues with the very first enemy I encountered after the training area and just gave it up. I need to dive back in after I finish a game and on a day Im rested and worth a darn.

This exactly.

Elden Ring isn't as linear as the other From games. You're encouraged to go around and level up and come back later. It's seriously the most accessible of all their games.

I'd love some input from somebody who gave this game a shot even though they disliked other From Software games. I've heard from a lot of people that "It's different" than games like Sekiro, which, not bashing, I just didn't enjoy. I'm looking for a co-op game that I can play with my wife. Right now we are loving DRG on Lethal and have been playing brutal+ co-op on StarCraft 2 for years. We like tough games, but I think she'd bail if it doesn't start off slow and ramp up. Any thoughts?

I'm not sure whether to laugh or start kicking myself. 🤦

This is not a couch co-op game, although you can summon temporary companions or adversaries in online play. It's not Sekiro in terms of gameplay and combat where you have to parry -- more of an open-world successor to the Dark Souls trilogy. If a boss is giving you trouble there are plenty of other places to explore while leveling up.

Elden ring won GOTY and gets such high praise for very good reason. I've played through 3 times now, 2 solo and now almost done with a Coop run. That is unheard of for me, usually games can't hold my attention that long. Especially single player games. My biggest tip is knowing when you should walk away from a fight and go somewhere else. Sometimes you're under leveled, they make this clear from the very first enemy you see (golden horseback guy).

I've never played another From Software game, and I absolutely loved Elden Ring. As others have mentioned, the trick is to know when to move on to another enemy, explore another area, etc -- in most cases, doing that was more satisfying to me than hitting my head against the wall with a particular enemy. I'm not good at these types of games typically, but I found that avoiding bosses for the first however many levels really helped me avoid frustration. Improving at the combat was one of the most satisfying gaming experiences I've ever had, and the fun of exploration and beauty of the environment kept me going until I developed some self-efficacy with that.

I did play it. Been gaming for decades and played them all.

I feel weird playing Elden Ring, because I hate it. I'm told I'm supposed to like it. I'm told I'll be playing it for weeks straight. I'm told It's the best game ever made.

Then I play it and it looks drab, the content is full of nonsense words, and I was several hours in with no clue what I was supposed to be doing to why I was doing it.

I'm going to give Cyberpunk 2077 another try.

Cyberpunk 2077 rocks. For me personally, it's one of my favorite games from the past handful of years. Granted, I paid like $8 for it and played after the problems had been majorly addressed. "Phantom Liberty" just released recently too and I've heard good things. I personally plan on starting a new CB2077 run soon w/ the PL expansion. Between the expansion and the new CB 2.0 patch, I've heard nothing but great things.

That's why I want to start it again. I heard the new 2.0 patch basically made it into a different game.

So tempting, but Starfield and my backlog say to wait another year or so. I guess a good problem to have Smilie. I hear there are some great mods for this game as well.
