The T7 shield has nvme drive inside vs the 870 evo 2.5 sata you are comparing to.
Speed would be limited to sata 3 speeds vs nvme here

Great drive! I use the same model with my PS5 for my PS4 games. No issues whatsoever.

How would this T7 Portal SSD Shield compare to getting a Samsung 870 EVO 4TB and putting it in an enclosure?

I ask because I've got 2 of the AMEX Member Rewards Week Dell $50 off $100 offers. But Dell doesn't sell the 4TB SSD Portable externals. Dell does sell the 870 Internal and I could get that price matched to Best Buy [bestbuy.com] or Amazon for $170. Minus $50 makes it $120. And then the UGREEN 2.5" Enclosure USB C 3.1 Gen 2 to SATA III 6Gbps [amazon.com] is $14 today.

Speed is great. Backs up my 1tb quickly! Not like those crucial drives.

What would the speed difference be like? I'd be replacing my USB 3.0 drives so would the SATA 3 speeds at least be significantly better? It's quite a bit more price wise to get to these NVME portable drives. I'd be ok with an incremental upgrade.

Yeah, if your system does not have a usb 3.2 gen 2 port, then it doesn't matter much.
For a usb 3.0 a sata 3 should work fine in terms of speed

Every time this is posted I think it is an amplifier for a car subwoofer. A lifetime ago I competed in car stereo competitions.

Only 3x the price of traditional drive now. Is this good for BT / plex server?

I bought 2x 4TB T7 Shields for backups and storing movies and holy good lord do they transfer files fast and consistently! It took about 8 hours to copy 4TB of movies from my old external 4TB HDD (usually takes almost 24 hours mechanical HDD to mechanical HDD in the past!) and then duplicating to the other T7 Shield took just over an hour for 4TB woohoo!

I got the best historical deal earlier this year @ $220 each but now they are going for $199, I'd highly highly recommend them! They're nice and impact resistant, got a durable rubber outer case and yes, label maker labels stick to the rubber just fine haha. They also each come with USB-A and USB-C cables as well. Very happy with them over here!
