I love the shield for when it came out. It's been mostly solid and ahead of the pack. But make sure you check the shield forum on nvidia. They for about 2+ years now have had massive problems that they just can seem to solve. It really make updates scary to do, because you might end up turning your shield into a problem that just doesn't work as it should. There's no going back after updates. I remember once I did an update and the thing had a sound dropping issue for about 8 months to a year. They finally fixed the issue but the fix added about 20 more issues. At some point I got an update that was good enough and now I just never update it anymore which I'm glad because months after each fix I go and read the forums and you can clearly see a multitude of problems. If this was a small company you could easily say well it takes time but this is a multibillion dollar company and industry leader in their field. I have a fire 4K max and it's super cheap and seems to mostly have caught up with the things you can do on the yield minus gaming. A lot of the problems I have dealt with have to do with streaming services and with plex. If you like to stress and not know when a fix will be coming (and it's been about 3 they've been working on the latest problems introduced) then this is a good machine and very capable of being the best streaming box out there. Oh yeah lastly there's a problem where it floods the storage with junk so all of the space is eaten up in a day or so and it will constantly flash a massive box saying storage almost full on top of anything you're doing ever 30 seconds, I think it's great but I just wanted to warn people of what they might be getting into before they purchase it. Go look at the nvidia forums for the shield before purchasing.

Thanks for your review! I've been eyeing this for a while but it hardly goes on sale so kept waiting, guess it's at the age it needs an upgrade :/

I don't understand but I'm trying to place an order of one unit in Amazon and it is being automatically cancelled saying an error with quantity limit. I have ordered a lot in the past but they were already past transactions and the limits should not take effect. Amazon customer service is of no help!

Yes been around for awhile and only $20-30 discounts here and there. People must be still buying these alot if they're not deep discounting these. I have 3 of them and haven't used them in years since all my tvs have built in Google and don't lag

Once you do the latest update to Android TV. A ton of apps aren't supported. I know nvidia doesn't care about consumers. I'm still mad about local GeForce now support being discontinued. Right now I watch Amazon prime videos and crunchyroll on my shield pro.

Interesting. I've had my 3 (one 2017 and 2x2019 pro) shields streaming from my NAS Plex server and TV tuner, Netflix, Amazon, custom YT client to remove ads, and have never had any of the problems you listed or a video it couldn't play. The only complaint I have is the shitty remote on the 2017 model (not relevant anymore). They did kill off GeForce Game Stream which was a kick in the balls, but there are OK-ish alternatives now with Moonlight.

Years later, all 3 are still snappy and are workhorses.

Nvidia is not going to upgrade this niche product when their AI stuff is propelling their stock price to stupidly high valuations. Their interest at the moment is only AI.

That's a high price for a pretty old product at this point, last revision was 2019. Nvidia being Nvidia.

I have a shield TV on all my TVs. I've had them for years with not many issues. Basically using them to watch all the TV streaming apps and to run VLC to play content off my home server. Love the remote.

Can't believe it's still over $150. Seems like it's been out forever.

How are you doing the 'VLC to play content off home server'? I'm using Plex, but it sounds like there is another option using VLC. I'm just not sure how you configure.

Been on my deal alert for awhile. $30 off for a five-year-old product is a pittance at this point. It still looks like a great device, but I don't wanna plop that much money on something that's gonna stop getting updates as soon as I buy it.
