I think it's bit of an in-trend thing these days to buy and own physical media. Vinyls are a bit more expensive. A $5 Metallica CD is more friendly for folks just getting into collecting. That and CDs being of better audio fidelity than LPs.

I'm actually buying this CD the same way I'd buy a book or something else that's tangible.

Having said all of that, if the goal is just listening to the sounds, digital (FLAC/lossless/320k mp3) is 100% on par/better than physical media in general. Sure, the better hardware you have, maybe you hear more of the specifics. But a FOSI DS1 (there's a current deal on that) through your phone that's streaming /rendering digital audio, through a decent set if headphones/IEMs , will be all that you would ever need to enjoy good sound.

The "audiophile" experience is more of a rich-people hobby, which is fine and fair. But no one who's not in that camp should ever feel like they can't enjoy good audio. Because you can. And you should.

LOL. Some of us actually grew up with tangible items like books, CDs, cassette tapes, and records. I prefer to not rely on some corporation allowing me to continue access to things I have bought. CinemaNow taught me that.
