from the reviews (and experience with DS220j), this won't be the best with plex transcoding. For direct play, this is fine - but if you are transcoding and stuff - look for ones with better processors and more ram like + series.

You can pair this with a shield pro or a NUC and get a full-blown home plex server plus other stuff you may want your NAS to do but this isn't the very good at (like virtualization station, vpn, etc.). I personally use Shield pro for plex and n100 mini pc for other stuff, and that work as intended. This is good at what it does especially at its price point - being a NAS/File server.

Audio uses little to no processing power... and yeah, syncing files, etc. is also low resource. You should be good.

Not really in the market for one of these right now, but always considered one for music and local Documents/Pictures storage. Are these two-bay drives powerful enough to handle Plex audio needs and local syncing?

B&H Photo is matching the price with in-cart coupon: https://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/pr...osure.html

I have a 220j and it has served my needs, but I read the 223j has btrfs that will prevent(?) bit rot. I store all of my old home videos that have been digitized on it and would hate to lose them. Seems the 223j would cure all of that. I'm not sure I want to jump into the higher Synology stuff at this point. Thoughts?

Just curious whats your setup or usage on the 8 bay vs the 2 bay? I've got a 4 bay, but have been thinking if I need more space in the future

Great to know. Seems like they have these Synology sales every October/November. One of these years, I'll feel rich enough to spring for the new NAS and some HDDs.

What's the benefit of buying with B&H over Amazon?

Does it come with the default 2 camera surveillance station license?
Doesn't really say much about the standard license other than supports unto 12 cameras in surveillance station.
Will be using it as nvr and plex server. Not really happy with power consumption and noise of a dell mini i7 server running 24/7.

If I already have a server running Plex, would it be beneficial to utilize something like this for redundancy purposes vs typical external HDD? If I throw 2x 5GB HDDs in there will it mirror and if one fails the other one could still be operational?

Milne, yes it would mirror those 5 gig pigs. You should be able to swap out a drive if one handgernades. Not sure if the processor can render videos. I'll hop over to nascompairs, tons of reviews on NAS

Good post. I purchased the 220+ from B&H Photo (never seemed to be on sale anywhere else) for $249. I had been using a Terramaster basic model and Synology is so much better, especially the software. I think the + is better at transcoding for Plex material and worth the extra cost in addition to other benefits (more memory). I am also using mine with a Beelink mini PC and this setup has worked great for me.

I am still a newbie when it comes to this, but learning new applications often.
