Wonder, how much is the nits rating like 5,000,000 to 1 contrast ratios on some TV's...no way it could be exaggerated by the manufacturer

If laptop manufacturers put their minds to it, We could have 2000 nit SDR screens that are much more easy to read in sunlight.
Unfortunately I don't think that's a priority, and if they do consumer testing it's likely inside, and focus groups I doubt ever experience things in less than ideal conditions, or the battery life.
For example my work laptop, a Dell 5420 claims both 220 nits indoors and 1000 nits in direct sun. Explain how they put a new backlight in the LCD when I am outside but take the backlight out when I go indoors. Is it the tooth fairy's bother?
I get it, a bright display is great for the 1% of the time you need it. But a super bright display tends to look like crap the other 99% of the time as it is tuned for outdoor use. I don't know about you but I hate crap colors and washed out displays. If I wanted to read ebooks while at the pool I'd buy a Kindle.
