really need to up my nas from an old one that no longer has much support and if the mobo crashes, ill not be able to find a replacement

how is this device for purposes of purely serving up movies/tv shows?

I don't need it to run the plex server - but if it can, that would be cool, as I run plex from a different machine

how secure/stable is this one?

edit: sounds like it is terrible for plex server and crashes and can't even server 720p video. but maybe perfectly fine as a regular NAS serving files?

The Terramaster has an Intel CPU, which combined with it's integrated GPU seems to be good for transcoding. Also the RAM is expandable, the QNAP just has 4GB soldered.

The Terramaster has TRAID, similar to Synology's SHR, a preferred RAID type for some people.

I'm holding out for a Synology sale, looking into the DS423+, but this one looks like a good alternative. Honestly just don't like how it looks.

I have this NAS, with upgraded memory and an OS replacement to TrueNas SCALE. It serves as storage to my Proxmox servers for all my virtual servers, one of which is a Plex server which can serve 4k video across my network just fine.

Just curious, why did you upgrade the OS? I heard they improved the OS and should work a little better. Kind of disappointed that my Synology DS920+ I could not use my nvme drives as storage (only can be used as cache) and was wondering if you can do this in this server.

Is this better than Synology or QNAP?
I'm new to the NAS but have a hazy idea
Is this a reliable solution
Heard good things about Synology

it's dead. Was going to get this over the Qnap with the expandability. Will see what comes up tomorrow.

it's still showing as live for me when I just checked . . . with the specs on this device it should perform very nicely for Plex/most server tasks . . . it's just a matter of changing the OS to TrueNas scale/other to get the most out of it IMO . . .

I have the 5 bay version running great for a few years. I added more RAM and slapped unRAID on it and it runs great. Had to do some minor tweaks to the config to get fan monitoring working, but other than that it works great. Used it as a Plex server for a while with direct streaming...it can't transcode without crashing after a while, but direct streaming is fine.

Edit: I should say my 5bay version has lower spec hardware. Only a dual core celeron and 2 1gig ports. Still, works great.

I wouldn't say I like Terra NAS - even Mediasonic is more reliable.

have one. Their system (TNAS) is enough for most regular use. And this model supports the docker. I run Jellyfin/emby on it without any issues.
If you don't like their OS, just replace the booting usb drive with yours and run the TrueNAS/Unraid/DSM on it.

So, good deal!
