The thing kept randomly disconnecting while streaming, which is mentioned in the comments multiple times. The bass control is over complicated, and you can't turn it up enough making it sound very thin. The IR blaster feature I couldn't get to work. Very limited controls overall compared to Denon. Go ahead and Audition this for yourself but try the Denon line up to.

I have the matching Sony speakers in a 5.2 with 2 Sony atmos ceiling speakers.
Sad to hear the long awaited replacement isn't that great. I've had onkyo in the past with mixed reliability but may go Yamaha when upgrade is due if Sony doesn't fix this model or offer another model.

The 1080 won't do 4K120 which is the only reason why I'm probably upgrading to this. I have no issues with the 1080 so I'm hoping it's the same reciever with higher hdmi bandwidth. The NR7100 pointed out in the below comment does seem interesting.

How many 2.1 do you need? I know people want more, but I don't think when it comes down to it, they will be needing more. Most people don't realize that they can get away with 2.0 for most things they will do. You can always get a HDMI switcher with a remote.
When I upgrade my receiver I expect to keep it at least a decade, preferably longer. I'll upgrade my TV probably twice in the time of having it. My current setup would benefit from the increased bandwidth in a handful of ways, but future proofing would be nice. My PS5, XSX, and gaming PC all have 2.1 today. When a replacement for the Shield Pro drops that needs it that'll get upgraded as well. So the direct answer to your question is 4 today, but I'd prefer to have one or two more available for other devices that may pop up.

Fair enough then I agree with you. Definitely should be a dealbreaker. I'm not a gamer and I figured most people maybe have an Xbox and a PS5 so two would be good enough. I thought I needed 2.1 because it was the newest technology and I bought a 77 inch G3 and surely I needed 2.1 My new Apple TV has 2.1, but it must be for future upgrades because right now you don't need it. I think there are a lot of people like me that just thinks you need it. I myself get a new TV every 5-6 years and do the Soundsystem at the same time.
