But why? It's probably easiest to keep track of one gift card that can be used for anyone, rather than have Southwest cancel credit( travel funds) tied to one person, and additionally saving all the cancelled confirmation numbers. Southwest does not have any easy way to look up your total accumulated flight funds in one location under your account.
Buy any Wanna Get Away Plus tier ticket, pay with gift card(s), then cancel ticket for refund to account as flight credit.
Yup - this method would work without any issue (and allow you to transfer the credit to another person, and I believe that person could rinse and repeat if they need to subsequently transfer).

Flight credit can only be used by the person who booked it. So if you want to buy tickets for you and your family, only yours will be eligible for the flight credit.
That's incorrect.
The method hsus0225 suggested was to purchase a Wanna Get Away Plus tier ticket which (along with with Anytime and Business Select tier tickets) can be transferred to anyone with a Rapid Rewards account. You can see the fare details / benefits here[southwest.com].
Only the basic Wanna Get Away (i.e., the "non-Plus" version) has non-transferrable credits, but worth keeping in mind those no longer expire either.

See above. Credits for cancelled WGA+ fares are transferrable.
