Have this and it is simple and durable. I keep it in my glovebox all year round. Won't tell you all issues or pin point certain complex issues BUT I have used to to clear codes for "very small evap leak" and diagnosed bad spark plug and failed fuel pump. Also have used it to provide codes and general descriptions to my mechanic. If you have this it can help you have a general idea of what is wrong and can help you be somewhat knowledgeable when dealing with a mechanic so you are less likely to be taken advantage of.

Great scanner, I have I think 3 of them from previous sales at this price. I've only really used them for ~20 year old vehicles, and they work great for check engine lights and checking emissions/inspection readiness after completing a repair or disconnecting the battery for an extended period of time. Won't do what the fancier scanners can do, but when you don't have cell phone reception and need to know what your car is telling you or to keep one in the garage, this is absolutely perfect.

If you have Android, I prefer a bluetooth dongle and the torque app for troubleshooting my/friends cars.

In the market for one as my old Bluetooth elm one won't work with iPhone and I'm battling a P1449 code on my Impreza. Any idea how this works with Subaru's? Or if there's a better one in the sub $50 price range that's worth upgrading to?

You need the WiFi version for iPhone devices.

I see that it has evap leak test, how good it is in identifying specific issue? I've a P0420 (catalyst system efficiency below thresold, bank 1) on my toyota which I'm trying troubleshoot pairing my bluetooth obdII reader with torque pro app. Will this help more than what I've? TIA.

Bank 1 is almost always upstream o2 sensor.

Most dongles have BLE or BT 4.0+ which work with iPhones. The old school BT ones aren't compatible, but for the most part they are gone and you don't have to settle for a WiFi one anymore.
