Tax in California if it matters $46. Which means they have a prescience in California
Segway had a "grand dream" for last mile transport, safety, and they were impressive tech for their time… but they cost like $5k or more (I forget) and they had a "nerd factor" with the Personal Transport's (PT's) oversized hoverboard style. They tried to be a last mile solution for cities, where you would have been able to buy and ride a PT to take you from bus/train to your office and back, "safely" among pedestrians at the speed of a fast walk or light jog, and talked to the city bureaucracy to get permission. As you can imagine, they got bogged down by said bureaucracy, never could make PT's cheap enough and cool enough for average consumers, and after their CEO had an accident riding one they almost essentially went bankrupt. For the most accurate info, look it up… it's a wild story.
Ninebot came in, because they wanted to sell their much cheaper and faster electric scooters and electric unicycles in the US. They were way more profitable in China than Segway ever was here. There is a huge stigma against Chinese goods, but they figured they could gain credibility by buying the Segway brand, and I believe they got some of their tech as well (helped with their unicycles). Ninebot is kinda like AT&T or Apple: they make decent quality stuff, but as a "name brand" they usually charge more. They do have some advanced models that are quite faster than this, and even some electric riding scooters 🛵.
My personal experience: I got a D18W on clearance from Walmart. It's destroyed my price to performance baseline, haha. It maxes out at like 15 mph, and can't make it up the one steepest hill right by my house, but once a week I ride it through the park and pickup a backpack full of groceries. I weigh almost 200 lbs, but the scooter frame doesn't struggle as I take a 60L hiking backpack with food. The pneumatic wheels do way better than I expected dealing with cracks and chunky bits of road, it runs quiet and smooth, and I have a lot of fun! In addition to wishing it could go up my steep hill (I walk it up now), I'd say the latch is too sticky/tight to allow me to fold the scooter easily… but otherwise, I've been real happy with it.

Upgraded to a vsett and I can go up hills faster now.
Everyone doesn't live in California, so some of us don't deal with 85° inclines.
Like everything else, these folks take reasonable specs and add 50% to them to make them look good to buyers. That's why there are so many 'refurbs'. They get returned a lot.
So my point would be to buy one from a local outfit that you can return it to, not some extension of the CCCP.
