As another poster noted look at the ingredients label. There is (for some reason) a big chunk of sugar added to this variety. It's about 30 calories per serving for regular diced tomates and 50 cals per serving for these! Sugar is the second most prevalent ingredient right after tomatoes. 175 cals per can for these vs 105 per can for regular diced tomatoes.

I use to wonder if I should get canned crushed, diced or whole tomatoes for my red sauce. I did a little research and found that they add a chemical to canned diced tomatoes so that they maintain their shape and firmess.

I know any call outs like this get a lot of hate here but I'm sure some people care to know. One less chemical is fine with me.

Yup, it is true, and interestingly enough Target Good & Gather whole tomatoes rank very well as long as cooked down enough. Most of my tomatoes go into instant potted or slow cooked soups, stews and braises or into a sauce simmered on the stove. I buy a variety of brands from private labels and branded and a lot from Grocery Outlet, trying to stay at 33-50 cents per can. For a can you can get every day at a good price, the Good & Gather whole peeled are very tough to beat. I stick blend them in the can or cut them up with kitchen scissors as necessary. No, they aren't as good as those fake-labeled San Marzanos but they good enough for the vast majority of our uses and can produce a great sauce using a recipe as simple as NYT Marinara.

For you tomato sauce lovers, if you have an Aldi close, the Specially Selected jarred pasta sauces are divine and made by the commercial producer of Rao's. They just added a Kale Pesto (which is still a red sauce) and a Tomato and Basil, both of which I haven't seen before. the Vodka sauce is fantastic and we love that when Costco has their cold section Rana Lobster Ravioli (or is it crab? can't remember).

It is probably the calcium chloride, CaCl2, you are referring to. I like to make my own pickles and it is sometimes sold as pickle crisp. I looked at the ingredients of the CONTADINA Petite Cut Diced Tomatoes and it is listed as the last ingredient.

The artichokes are the best deal by far to use this coupon. The pineapple is also an ok price. The tomatoes aren't really a good price at all.
