Looks like toner costs are at least $120+ for even generic ones

If this is your first time using Brother laser, make sure you know that it's actually not laser but LED. Canon and HP use the real laser. The difference is when you have to print a high dpi photo on a flyer or brochure. Brother laser LED will not be able to print in High Detail like what Canon or HP laser can do. I learned this from personal experience.

Nice to see printers dropping in price. Got in on the $160 brother deal a few days ago. Is this better?

I've got the 656 model and really like it, but some of these newer models don't have a very competitive third party toner business yet ($80 per; or $140 for 4). A lot of more knowledgeable people on those threads say this is pretty common, so I'm hoping to get plenty of life out of the factory toner while waiting for EZink (or whoever) to come up with something good and cheapish.

Do you have a source regarding the Brother's LED and not laser?

They offer both laser and LED. It depends on the model, but Brother is pretty upfront about which are laser and which are LED. They can't control if resellers list things inappropriately.

They do use the phrase "laser quality" in places on products where they use LEDs though, so that may throw some people off.

Haven't been following up on canon laser printers in a while... Are their cartridges chipped and if so is it easy to block their firmware updates so they can't be rendered useless with future use of third party cartridges?

According to my research it was never blocked, unlike HP even start lying about cartridges being empty, Canon just keep nagging you about it not being authentic. During the pandemic their official toners doesn't come with chips due to shortages and they posted an announcement telling you to just ignore the warning.

Canon is All-In-One. The Brother is a printer only.

That's still pretty expensive no? Considering brother replacements cost around 40ish????
Yes, maybe with time they will go less. The xerox ones were around $40 for all 4, these are
Significantly larger but I haven't used them yet I am still on the starter, first set I purchased for the xerox were similarly priced and after a year or two they dropped to half

Your feedback is exactly what scares me.

Currently using an Epson Workforce print/scan/copy model. It's probably 2-3 years old. We use it regularly, but not a ton. I think we got it at Costco and it came with a separate set of ink refills. We still haven't bought ink for it.

It won't print colors right. Blue text comes out pink. Black sometimes comes out yellow.

So, I've been wondering if a color laser would fix our issues. Sounds like maybe not.
Inkjets are significantly different from laser printers. These do not use ink they use dry toner and hear, each high yield cartridge says approx 3600 pages of print which is a long time for myself. Also no possibility of print heads clogging with a laser because of the toner. Generally once I purchased a laser I would never buy an inkjet again. The starter cartridge comes with 500 pages on each which is still a good amount compared to inkjet

I bought this last deal, I went from a xerox 6027 that I got from an SD deal a few years ago. Printing is great, set up was smooth. Much quieter then the xerox, mine is having an issue with printing too much blue on color prints, but it takes card stock like a champ and pretty quick. I was checking amazon pretty often for a toner set I ended up with a kaloking set for $79.99 with prime all four high yield I haven't installed them yet but hopefully it will give me a couple years of printing overall really nice printer and smaller footprint.

Edit: I forgot to mention, Walmart has these Instore at some locations I picked mine up same day even though website said out of stock check locations in your area ymmv
Hope you don't mind providing link to the kaloking color ink set for $79 for this Canon printer. I searched Amazon and could not find any. Thanks.

I'm really on the fence. Money is tight and our 15 yo inkjet works perfectly (surprising, especially after having sat for years a few years ago!) Black + color cartridges are no longer made and reman is $40 for the combo. We did just replace the cartridge, so we have plenty of time to figure out what to get.

We're definitely going to go laser next, but really want duplex printing to save on paper.

Don't expect anything close to photo quality from a color laser printer.

Thanks for that. I forgot to mention that we do a good bit of color printing but don't need it to be photo quality.
