Reasons that people still buy and use standalone GPSes
1 - People who don't have unlimited data plans (there are a few)
2 - areas that have absolutely no cell service (some mountain pass areas)
3 - Traveling to another country without a SIM or being charged a crap-ton of data roaming
4 - not wanting to be on Google's records of when/where you are
5 - having a second screen dedicated to navigation
There are probably more, but these are the ones I just pulled out of the air
These units are actually pretty good, if you travel a lot by bike. They are water proof, so you can leave them on the bike all the time.
Yes, the phone can also serve for navigation, but you would need accessories to make it waterproof. Plus the vibration from the bike would probably damage the phone after a bit.
Garmin makes really nice high tech watches. TomTom though... I have no idea how they are still around. They must be servicing 3rd world countries with devices. Got to find your niche.

I'd think these guys and TomTom would have been out of business by now because of Google Maps.

Any reason this standalone garmin unit would be a better option?
I had been using my phone, but no the vibration can mess up the cameras.
Using your phone with the Peak Design case and motorcycle mount is an excellent way to avoid damaging the cameras. I've been using my iPhone 14 Pro on my dual-sport for more than a year now and it's been fine. My bike vibrates a lot.

I want to add one more that i think is relevant.
If you get in a wreck, your phone will still be on your person as opposed to being flung 150 ft away.
If you are pretty banged up or immobilized, this can be a life saver.

Anyone commenting about why these are still available hasn't owned a dirt bike with license. Most full on exploring off the grid means you ideally want to keep your Satellite available iPhone 14-15 on your person to text for help if you bail. Also having a phone on a bike (sometimes I do it if I have to via quad lock) is not ideal "long term off road".
This unit is regularly this price, can find it at places with further coupon discounts Black Friday (gpscity)… this unit meh, it's pretty old and laggy and not that bright. I'm waiting for the "XT" newer version to get close to $220 mark… it's crazy that the xt is 500-600…. But if you dirt off-road for days these are super important to have. Always have 2 sources of gps if you go way outback
I have unlimited data and global roaming through tmobile and yet use the zumo. My cycle Garmin Edge GPS and Zumo will warn if a dangerous curve is ahead. Also you can reset fuel tank when visiting a gas station and it will alert at set miles to again remind you to refill! And as others mentioned the elements and havingba dedicated Device is awesome.. Also you can set any POI and choose twistiest route for navigation! Also on a hot 90 degree day in summer, having an expensive phone out as a GPS and also overheating is not worth it!

you don't know off-line maps/navigation? you don't need SIM card or internet to use off-line navigation. there are plenty off-line navigation apps

These units allow you to do more complex route-planning. And they stand up to the elements.
