If you're already in this battery system though, it's total no brainer if you need/want a tracksaw. If not, yeah you'd need to add batteries.

how much was the makita? and i don't own any ridgid batteries, so not sure if i should get the track or battery which is also on sale

if you need to rip full sheets of plywood you'll want the track, if you can get by with a 4' cut you should go with the battery.

I grabbed one off Ebay for under $300, added some off-brand tracks, clamps, and a 90* bracket off amazon for another ~$100.

Since I'll be tethered to a vacuum anyway I don't mind the cord, and didn't want to mess with another battery system, but if you want/need to be mobile the battery options are great.

up to you really, but it might be cheaper to get the rail separately later. You'll still need a charger though. Separately the battery is $139 and rail is $99.

If you have Milwaukee batteries, you might want to keep an eye out for upcoming holiday sales on the M18 track saw. This Ridgid comes up at this price every few weeks, so is bound to happen again if time is not an issue.

EDIT - also, as klocwerk mentioned, use case is a factor too. I opted for the battery last time this deal popped up, forgetting I had a 5Ah Max battery from a sub-compact circ saw kit. In hindsight, I should have gotten the track. I don't think 6Ah vs 5Ah would be a big factor in my limited use.

will, the kit doesn't come with a charger. might as well get the track and buy the battery and charger separately

Well, with a circular saw, it varies. It depends on what you're using it for, and how you're using it for.

A track saw is different in how it is primarily used for rip cuts.

As a former lefty, now full-time righty, it's a pain in the butt to use a right blade with my right arm. Especially if I need to rip a 1"-3" strip off of a full sheet,l; or if I need to square the edges on sheet goods bought from Home Depot (because they rarely run true).

So you can take all the tracks - 2 x 27" + 1 x 60" - and make an 8' track'ed cut? Is that correct?

Keep in mind that the Ridgid uses proprietary tracks and won't work on the more common style (used by Festool, Makita, Milwaukee, etc.) This is a huge downside in my opinion, as those tracks also have accessories that won't work on the Ridgid track. You can also get cheaper tracks from manufacturers like PowerTec.

I was excited about this saw when it was announced, as I'm heavily in their battery system for lights, fans, and tools. But the track issue (and the saw being overpriced initially) led me down another path. As I always use dust collection with my track saw, it didn't matter to me whether it was corded or battery. So I went with a corded option that's compatible with the common tracks.

It seems this is a good saw at a good price if it fits your use case and the downsides don't apply to you.
