I'm not familiar with the latest gen motherboards. Is the 790 better than the 690 chipset wise?

That msi 690 MB is very good better than the asus one, msi 690 works for 13th gen and should work for 14th gen as well. Msi one has 1 pcie gen 5 and 2 pcie gen 3. But really they are useless if you aren't using them. Asus 790 has 1 gen 5 and 2 pcie gen 4. Def msi one is better, you can tell from the original price. If you do get the msi 690. Make sure you update the bio and install wifi driver

Gamers Nexus, Hardware Unboxed, der8auer and Hardware Canucks all took slightly different angles on reviewing the "new" 14th gen CPUs.

If you're getting paralyzed too much, note that there is not much difference between stuff now a days....

You might be interested in the der8auer(of Corsair/Thermal Grizzly fame) video. He went and tested 12900k, 13900KS, 14900K, 7800X3D and 7950X3D at Intel and AMD specs (DDR5 4800 for 12900k, 5600 for 13900k, 5200 for 7800X3D,...) and than also at what a regular person would get. AMD recommends 6000 for Zen4 and regular users would realistically buy around 7200 for Intel. Just note the CL30, not any garbage RAM.

I bought the z690 msi combo for 399$, everything works perfect. I am sure this setup will serve me for at least 5 years. I paired this combo with an samsung 980 pro ssd, 4070ti, aio water cooler. Running everything maxed at 1440p

It sounds like it wasn't so much a 'swap' as a "you gave me the wrong motherboard with this combo and I'd like the one that's being advertised with the bundle instead of receiving this downgrade" and they corrected their mistake.

I got the same. Same SSD, same water cooler. But GPU is sapphire nitro+ RX 7900 xtx. Everything runs smooth on 4K. I upgraded from AMD 3900x and EVGA RTX 3090. RTX 3090 had temperature issue. It used to get overheated! Finally this 7900xtx runs super cool. Never saw running over 65°C on 4K gaming!

Nothing extra, perhaps as a result of my original purchase being one of Micro Center bundle deals.

Worth it only if you're several years (4+) behind on a new rig imo. Hold out for 13900 and 13700 deals, or go 7800x3d or 7950x3d route.

Except this is literally less than half the price of the 13700 as a bundle, with a relatively marginal decrease in performance. If you wait a year then pricing may be about the same, generation older and all.

7950x3d is a better performer, but at about 4x the price. LMAO 7800x3d is power efficient and a good gaming chip, but the 12900K is better in many other ways. (integrated graphics, more cores, strong single core performance, etc)

At least that mobo shows a First BIOS release date of 2022/09/13. Should still get some updates as new issues come up.

However, 14th gen(literally just 13th gen with new "4" ink on the CPU) is the last CPU generation for this socket, should take that into account in any savings...
Would have been meta if intel just crossed out the the 3 and printed a "^4"on the cpu and the box… 😂

I agree, this is a great deal, its cheap, 12900k is still a top performer for gaming, productivity and in multi-thread its still 50% faster than a 7800x3D ($350+ alone). So you are getting both high end performance for very cheap

Even if you lowball the value of the motherboard and DDR5 to $150+$50 (lower than retail), because they might not be your ideal choices, that means the i9-12900k is being sold for $200. Its a steal.

Obviously a 13700k, 13900k, 14700k, 13900k are all clearly better parts, but we wont see them discounted this deeply for another year or more. And if you want you can upgrade to them later down the road.

13700k bundle was only $50 more last week. Will see more deal like that this season
