Look at the right edge of the board... it's missing a full set of standoff holes because ASUS cheaped out on the PCB and made it undersize to save a few pennies.
"undersize"?? no, this board is the standard ATX Form Factor size, 12" x 9.6"

it's also nowhere near being the cheapest z790 board that asus sells: https://www.asus.com/us/motherboa...l&Spec=569

I would avoid such a heavily cost reduced mobo because ASUS probably cut corners elsewhere.
sometimes these microcenter deals look like a bunch of cheap parts, but it's generally because the parts are older and/or m.c. got a deal by purchasing bulk quantities.

the ram in this deal for instance is the same thing that they've been bundling for months now, they must have bought a lot of it... if there is a complaint about cheap junk it's with that ram, i've already had a stick die on me.

Weird that the Microcenter bundle picture is missing the heatsink and I/O cover.

Also the board is under standard size and missing the right side mounting holes. ASUS gives dimensions of 12 inch x 9.2 inch

thanks for the correction.

looking at the layout versus, say, that msi board mentioned earlier: https://www.msi.com/Motherboard/P...=1&slide=1

i think that i'd rather have the shorter 9.2" height because the connectors along that bottom edge are easier to access in a tight case, and the board is more rigid there because the connectors are closer to the screw holes.

calling 9.2" height "cheaper" when it's potentially stronger doesn't make sense to me, but this is s.d. :-0 and perhaps there is an argument that the lower connector row would be harder to access if there is a card in the bottom slot.

7950x3d is a better performer, but at about 4x the price. LMAO 7800x3d is power efficient and a good gaming chip, but the 12900K is better in many other ways. (integrated graphics, more cores, strong single core performance, etc)
x2 on all that.

i like my 5900x for gaming and cool temps, but amd and nvidia both dropped the ball by failing to support h.265 4:2:2 decoding on the editing timeline, it's a huge fail.

i think that the i9-12900k has the same intel quicksync integrated gpu that's in the intel 13th/14th-gen cpu's, so there is little to be gained by paying extra $$$ for an i9-14900k, for example:

"Interestingly, Intel's performance advantage in Premiere Pro is actually almost completely independent of the 14th Gen launch. Between the new processors and the previous 13th Gen processors, we only saw a few percent difference. With BIOS and driver updates in the future, things may change, but as things stand today, we could have published a revisited article for "Intel Core 13th Gen vs AMD Ryzen 7000" and it would be almost identical to this post. So, while it is good for Intel to maintain their lead in this type of workflow, the 14th Gen processors are largely a launch that Premiere Pro users can completely ignore."

i9-12900k is the sweet spot right now, if you can keep the pig cool.

But is that really that big of a deal? In my mind i don't see the big deal but i havent built one in years so I don't know if this is a big reason to stay away or not.

Except this is literally less than half the price of the 13700 as a bundle, with a relatively marginal decrease in performance. If you wait a year then pricing may be about the same, generation older and all.

13700K bundle is $100 more but you can get 14th gen if sell 12900K CPU is going for $300 on used market and buy new 14700KF for $393 on B&H/Amazon

The problem is pairing a top end 241w CPU with such a severely cost optimized mobo... VRM temps/longevity could be problematic. The board will also look kinda dumb in a windowed case and the right half will flop around like a cheap OEM system.

If that doesn't bother you, it's fine. But I would go with a quality z690 board vs. a budget z790 board that's missing all the z790 specific features.

I picked this up yesterday - it comes with the MSI Z690 board, not the Asus board pictured. I was scared off buying an i9 last time I built a PC by worries about heat. Well, I'm in a NZXT H510 case with a DeepCool AS500+ Air Cooler on the CPU and an OC'd RTX 4070 and my 12900K is staying cool as a cucumber and quiet as a mouse while gaming. Any big tower or dual tower air cooler is up to the challenge if you're not slamming all cores all the time. Great deal!
