I was trying to decide between the same two as you, but ultimately ended up going with the V15 Detect Total from Costco (for $559.99) a week ago. Now I'll have to try and get them to match, or just return/rebuy for the $499.99.

My thoughts...the V12 Detect is mostly just a slightly lighter and less powerful version of the V15 Detect. The battery life is actual near identical, however the V12 (for some reason?) does fully recharge about 100min quicker than the V15 (from testing I saw online), but both last anywhere from ~8 minutes on a full charge, up to ~75 minutes, depends what power setting you use.

The biggest differences from my researching is that the V15 Detect Total has 3x as much canister storage before you need to empty, has better airflow and suction, is quieter during operation, and comes with more accessories/tools

On the flip side, the V12 Detect is about 20% lighter, more maneuverable, and has a switchable power button (instead of needing to constantly hold on the V15). It also comes in, in your case, over 35% cheaper. ($500 vs $315).

I'd say test out your V12 for a while, see how you like the suction on it and how often you are emptying the canister. If you find the suction to be fine, and the canister emptying to be a non-issue, then I'm not sure there's a reason for you to upgrade to the V15, unless there are a few accessories included that you feel you MUST have, or you just want the peace of mind of the Costco return policy.

I personally decided that I wanted to best suction possible and a larger canister, especially because I have three dogs that constantly shed year round. That, and the Costco warranty are what pushed me to go with the V15.

I contacted Costco live chat to ask about the $50 off $500 for this item on 11/23. They told me the Dyson V15 is not an eligible item, and only items with the label "NOV 23 ONLY" are eligible for $50 off $500.

Keep in mind, this V15 is not a refurb, so will be brand new, it comes from Costco, so it can be returned at any point if it breaks or stops working, and this is the Total Clean Extra version, so it comes with 10 attachments, including the Fluffy Optic head for hard floors.

I've a V8 and my folks have a V15. I like both. The V8 is significantly lighter and thus easier to maneuver but the battery runs out much sooner. The suction on the V15 is stellar. I also like its charging base wall mounting system better. Can't go wrong with either, just be ready to replace the V8 battery a year or two down the line. There are many good third party options.
Very helpful, thanks. The battery is a concern on the V8, although it seems there are options out there. So the battery on the V15 is much better? and it performs much better?

Also...is is really that big a deal to hold down the power button the whole time? Not having touched one, hard to tell how fatiguing/annoying that might get .

Not a big deal at all - the power button is part of the handle - it's more of a trigger.

If the area of your home you plan to vacuum is < 1000sqft in size, the v8's battery will be plenty. Else, go for the V15.

V8 Absolute for $270 after cash back, or this for $500? I just ordered the V8 last night to replace a dying Shark battery vacuum.
I have the v8 as this is just for in between cleanings and a handy hand vac. For the v8 model, one can buy an adapter, BTRUI brand, off Amazon to use the Dewalt or Milkwaukee batteries. I use the 6 amp Dewalt ones. I have hard floors and one area rug.

The new one has some cool electronics but also seems like more that can go wrong.

If I wanted to replace my good corded vac or had more carpet, you may want to go with a model that has more suction.

I just seached the qualifying items under appliances and there were some vacuums that would qualify for the 50 off 500 on 11/23 but I am pretty sure the dyson doesnt. still a good deal though!
also it appears the 499 is for 11/24-27 in store too!

I'm kind of thinking that if I want this to be my vacuum for quite a few years, I would probably be happier with the V15.

Interesting. Sort of expected the opposite, I guess the 15 is a big improvement.

The need to press the power button constantly seems like a hassle, but the rest sounds good. Might need to consider it. I do prefer to buy from Costco.

Is the $50 off real? I can't figure out what that's trying to say. At $450, it's probably a very good buy.
I have a Dyson (constant press to power) and Samsung (press once to power). I prefer the having to always press because when you are vacuuming and have to briefly stop to move something out of the way it's a bigger pain, and slower, to have to physically push a button than to release my finger. I could see if you had arthritis or other hand issues where press one would be a better option. Otherwise I've yet to find an advantage to press once to power.

Good to know, thanks. Reasoning makes sense, so long as its not a difficult thing to press down, and it sounds like that isn't the case. I guess I'm waiting on the V15 at this point. Stupid Costco always taking my money.

I'm looking for a hair tangle free vacuum and comparing Dyson V15 and Karcher VCN5. Disregarding the Costco sales $ and availability of returns of products, has anyone used a Karcher VCN5? It appears that VCN5 offers smaller bin capacity but tangle free and has stronger suction, if I'm not wrong. Thank you in advance!

Got it today, asked before if I can price match. I was told that no matter what sale I can always price match within 30 days. I previously had v10 which I hated once I crossed 1 year mark (the dust bin did not work as intended and always slid off, the leaves were not vacuumed but shredded). This one is 100 times better (plus if the dust bin breaks I can return it to Costco, learned my lesson because I got v10 off Amazon). The amount of dust it picked up just on one room was amazing, and the green light on the soft roller head is a love hate relationship- it shows me the things I probably rather did not know are there. I'm happy I can do price match, this way I can avoid Black Friday crowds in the store but still get the Black Friday price.

I see $699+tax for v15 on app while I am checking out. Is there any promo code to apply? Can you please guide me?
