Have both. The XM5 has better noise cancellation on planes. Considerable difference IMO. Bose are more comfortable and have better clarity. XM5 has better bass.

I bought them for $200 Black Friday 2022. I'd recommend them.
They sound great, the noise cancelling is very good, but not quite as good as my Sony XM4's. If you're putting away silverware or clank a glass, the Bose attempts to compensate and winds up sending a loud counter clank.
However, I cannot recommend any Sony's. The XM4 earbuds had the dead battery issue and my XM4 headphones have the random ear piercing squeal with ANC. Their quality control and reliability are not worth the risk.

I think I paid 200 for these at Costco last year? I'm no audiophile, but they're easily the best pair of headphones I have. Super recommend.

Isn't this different from the normal version the rest of the retailers sell without the "se"
Apparently, the only difference is the case. The original has a hard, clam shell and the SE has a "soft, sleeker" case

Looking for recommendations- QC vs QC45 specially for air travel.TIA

Haven't had a chace to try the new QC's. Their build is slightly different and the weight is very close to QC 35/45 series. The reviews I've seen say the sound quality and ANC is very similar.

I have used the QC 35II's for 4+ years. I give them high marks for comfort. The same will be true for the 45's as they are only a slight tweak from the 35 series.

I'm sure the QC35II's, 45's, and QC are all excellent choices.

Note - For non-air travel, I like to turn ANC completely off... something that can't be done for the 45's. Not sure if this is the same with the QCs and might not effect your situation.

Looks are subjective.

These are the most popular style/design of headphones you will find people wearing for airtravel... 3:1 hands down.

I'll take significantly better comfort over *slightly* better aesthetics every day of the week.

And they could be worse - Look at the Airpods Max. (Coming from someone with multiple iphones, ipads, and a mac less then 3 feet away.)

I want to get a headphone that I can use on long flights, so looking for something very comfortable and is truly noise cancelling. Would this headphone qualify on those parameters?
Yes - The QC35/45 series will be the most lightweight, foldable / some what compact, and most importatnly - Comfortable full sized ANC headphones you can purchase.

These really shine on long haul flights where comfort (for long use/wear time) and good ANC or your top priorities.

You will see more people with wearing Bose QC 35's/45's on flights than all other full sized head phones combined.

BOSE SC (new QuietComfort 2023 version?) is $219 after you go to check out too. I already got the 45 version for less than $150 so I don't think imma get the new one for $100 more with not much of a difference

I've owned and returned / sold two versions of the Sony's.

The QC's build, sound, and ANC quality is not as good... but the comfort wins out hands down.

I could never wear the Sony's more than ~30 minutes at a time. They are heavy, made my ears / face hot, and the clamping force (after adjustments) was simply too high. I really wanted to like/keep the Sony's but they were uncomfortable for me to wear for any length of time.

I'm not normally a fan of Bose, but the QC's are my goto when I need the convenience of closed cup *WIRELESS* headphones.

Now for serious music listening, I reach for my my wired Sennheisers or HIFImans every time. *NO* wireless headphones can compete with decent wired headpones (at even half the price) when it comes to fidelity, sound quality, sound stage, etc. The power budget is simply not available for wireless headphones / earbuds. And the more they try to compenstate with larger batteries, the more comfort suffers.
Can you recommend your go to wired Sennnheiser or HIFImans?

Yes people in this day and age sacrifice quality in the name of convenience!

My 1990s tracks sound way better on cd's played via wired headsets than any itunes junk with a bluetooth headset . It is just shameful that we sacrifice so much just so there are no wires and have lost true music sampling.
