I do miss the days when on Black Friday they'd have some no-name brand on sale for $5 after rebates.. I snagged a few of those back in the day and they still work great ... but as far as say using an extra hard drive you have lying around just like Tom1935 said as your "I'm going to backup my files and save them in something not connected to my PC so worst case scenario I still have said files" it works out pretty well if you're paranoid like me

The 'tool free' version is only a couple bucks more and has mounting points to secure whatever you put in there a bit better instead of relying on friction from the connector.
This is the one I'm going with since I need it for 2.5 in drives and I don't want them to accidentally slip out from being bumped or when move the housing around.

$24.99

you'd really have to BUMP that thing to make a 2.5 drive dc.. 2.5 drives weigh like nothing. imo the savings is worth it vs the mounting points. funny how the tool free version requires tools.

A rubber band from the asparagus in grocery store will address your concern. Just wrap the rubber band around the cover.

I prefer the original version since I want something more convenient to insert / remove disks, but not wide-open as typical HD docks.

I almost bought this until I realized I would only use it for SSDs, for which this is more cost effective SABRENT USB 3.0 to SSD / 2.5 Inch SATA I/II/III Hard Drive Adapter (EC-SSHD) https://www.amazon.com/dp/B011M8YACM

Could I use this device to connect to the SATA port on my surveillance system DVR and then swap HDDs when one fills up? I know this isn't typical but we have to keep surveillance footage for 3 years before we can dispose of it. Swapping out the drive from the outside instead of having to disassemble and then reassemble the DVR over and over would be preferable.

The only bummer is the toolless version does not come with a copy of acronis.
I'm buying the original OP version. It comes with acronis. I'm going to make this thing my little clone station. damn, is there such thing as a sata / nvme adapter?

Any idea if this is good at noise isolation? I have an 18tb exos in my server, with non-essential data, that makes an annoying high pitched whirring noise. Would like to get something like this to put the drive behind the server to hopefully eliminate that noise. Any advice?

What exactly is the difference between original and tool free version? Can anyone explain. Which is easier to do swaps etc?
