I would get if the recent reviews are good, as it seems the quality varies from batch to batch

Which one do you have? I got a TSR-7850 off Woot a few years ago. Still running well for me. I would buy a refurb anytime. The non refurb Onkyo I had before it was nothing but problems.

Same exact for me - TSR-7850 refurb from Woot, 3 years ago. The Front L/R terminals no longer work, zero output from my speakers. Center is fine. I tried a work around using the Bi-amp mode and that also isn't working. The Surround terminals still work, however, I only have a FCR set up for now, no surrounds.

This problem is in addition to the receiver going into protection mode every other time it's powered off. And then even then it won't want to turn on many times. It's been a headache.

How does this compare to the Onkyo TX-NR7100 (Dirac) at $650 or anything else in the price range? I am looking to replace a TX-NR656 mostly to get better room correction and secondarily to get the latest HDMI. I've also been eyeing a HDMI SACD player like the Sony UBP-X800M2 since I already have a bunch of SACDs but only analog outs on my current player. Speakers are just the Pioneer Andrew Jones in 5.1.2

This works great with my A90J. I had to exchange the first one though for freezing/restarting issues. Coming from a Denon S760H but I needed 2 HDMI outputs.

My understanding it's only games and just a few at that.
Some receivers will upscale current content also.

I kinda see your point since current displays can't even take full advantage of 4K/HDR!

So I just did this. Was coming from a NR-626 that was a holdover that lasted longer than expected.

I bought the Sony on the reviews, particularly Sony's 360 feature. Got it set up and out of the box I was really unhappy with the sound for music (movies were great). So ran the sound correction and it got better, but it was real hit and miss. The sound to me was very thin and tinny on some tracks and there was seemingly reason why genre or format wise.

I kept trying and then the NR7100 went on sale and thought I'd give it a try. Right out of the box the Onkyo was more pleasing to my ears. The bass was a little bit boomy, but after running Dirac it was a lot better.

I will say the Sony UI is better and Sony's HDMI support is better. I'm still struggling to get the Onkyo/AppleTV/TV working well (I know it can work since my older Onkyo was fine) and the Onkyo does lose HDMI signal when switching between things like the Paramount+ menu and the content. I have a feeling this Onkyo is more sensitive to lower spec cables. (FWIW I actually bought two and both exhibited the same behavior)

I think if you are using 4k at 120hz you need 8k. Otherwise 4k limited to 60.
