Never a bad thing to be able to save a few dollars!
The cashiers can't make manual price adjustments (according to a manager that I discussed this with). Receiving the discount requires them to scan a barcode on your app.

And no one cares if you're boycotting Starbucks. People will buy the product they like at the right price.
even the most fancy drinks rarely touch $7-8.. most will be $6ish
with this deal, most drinks will end up being $3-4, which is great for those that link sbux

Besides, a Venti Frappuccino (for example) is under $7 regularly, so it's not a bad deal at 50% off. My problem is that they do this sporadically, and when they do, there's a time limitation! 12-6 on a weekday is (intentionally) inconvenient!
