Seems good at first glance, but I'd be wary. I searched for this laptop on Google and the first Reddit post has issues with MSI Center (gaming software). It's also an MSI product and previous SD posts also had some users cautioning it: https://slickdeals.net/share/android_app/fp/872209

Good price for the graphics, but it gives me the same feeling as Acer laptops where it seems the majority of the budget went into the gpu.

Edit: My mistake, seems like this one is built from aluminum, as opposed to cheap plastic on the other MSI laptops like the Katana/GF series. It also has a flipped motherboard, meaning that upgrading RAM/SSD is harder.

Battery life and graphics performance are good, but this laptop is 2 years old at this point. I would recommend the similarly performing, but much newer Asus TUF A16 for $50 less from Best Buy (Dr. Wajahat). The TUF comes with a numpad, which many users here like, but both are pretty similar in terms of specs.

This appears to be an MSI issue. Here's an article [drivereasy.com] I found about how to fix it.

Any thoughts on this being use for a kid going to college as an Architect major using some pretty CPU/GPU intensive architecture software? This looks like a great deal if it will handle that?

Edit: After looking at the specs the college asks for this more than exceeds then so I pulled the trigger.

Glad that it fit the specifications, let us know how they end up liking it Smilie

This laptop was interesting when it came out in 2021, but it's kind of a tough sell today. Pretty good budget thin and light gaming laptop though.

just an observation but... seems odd doing a 15.6" screen and
massive cooling system, then leaving out the numeric keypad.

I've had this for about a month now. Got it when it was $799 on sale. Not a bad PC, plays all the games I want to play well enough (Starfield, Dead Space Remake, Control etc.). Won't play them on Ultra at 240fps, but I can achieve 60fps+ with adjusting game settings. I got it because I am going to be doing some travel via train a lot next year and wanted something that can play things my steam deck struggles to. Runs hot but it is a thin computer. Footprint is pretty small and the keyboard is nicely spaced so I'm assuming that's why its missing a numeric keypad. I had a Dell G7 and it's footprint was huge and it had a numeric keypad. Don't mind it missing if the computer is smaller and lighter. Haven't had any hinge issues like others have had. Guess time will tell with that though. Overall, I'm happy with it.

I don't know of any MSI 15.6 models that have keypads offhand (though I only know fairly recent models). The keyboard has a good amount of room, might not be so if I cut out 4-5" for a keypad.

Bought this laptop over a year and a half ago for about 1200 and still works great. The 6700m handles most games without an issue at fairly high settings.

That's a very loaded question, it would be better to ask a specific laptop with a 3060 vs this, then you need to include do you care about rt/ml tasks? Do you want better battery life or better performance, etc.

Speaking of ML, is the 3060 or 6700M better?

I'm guna guess you don't use ML outside of gaming based on your question? If so then the 3060 is "better".

Then get an nvidia card. You'll either not need it or out run it's usefulness very quickly depending on how hands on your class is. I'd talk to your instructor before you buy anything
