I've had one for a few years now. Love the power and the stainless steel attachments, but it has one huge design flaw.

The part that rotates and the whisk attaches to has a direct connection to the internal mechanism and as soon as the motor heats up this black grease begins to come out around the attachment area. It's not a lot, but it's still disgusting and gets in the dough if I don't remove it in time.

KitchenAid insists that it's normal and that it's safe for my family's consumption. I'd love to feed a spoonful of it to their CEO.

This is an awesome price on a very high end mixer. If you want an even less expensive alternative, they do sell this refurbished without the guard at https://www.kitchenaid.com/refurbished/stand-mixers/p.refurbished-nsf-certified-commercial-series-8-... [kitchenaid.com]

Stock goes in and out quite often multiple times a day and shipping is pretty slow, so expect it to arrive in a couple of weeks.

That sounds like the tolerances on the opening were not tight enough if its happening often. It is meant to allow some through to lubricate the opening, and it is rated for incidental food contact.

You can open it up and replace the grease with new grease that is lighter colored and not black. The black concerns me that the gears may have worn down some. There are multiple companies that sell the grease like this https://www.amazon.com/KitchenKip...09VKGQD82/

I bought one last year. Stepped up from the 6 quart pro. It's been great. I use it a few times a week.
Mine looked brand new and the attachments were new as well.

Most likely your answer will be the KitchenAid, but check with the pros https://www.reddit.com/r/AskBaking/s/WiBoHbjyeV

Thanks! What I'm reading actually points to ankarsrum in terms of the machine itself. That's said, it's valid that it may be difficult to get repaired in the US.

I appreciate your input and your recommendations, but the elephant in the room is that some of this stuff is supposed to come out and get into your food.

Maybe there's not been enough research to show that it's carcinogenic, but it doesn't actually mean that it's not considering that it's a cocktail of industrial chemicals.

This is from a 2014 patent that's held by some Chinese company that makes this mystery grease:

75-86 percent of base oil
1.0-3.0 percent of benzoic acid
3.5-6.5 percent of stearic acid
3.5-7.0 percent of aluminum isopropoxide tripolymer
0.5-1.5 percent of silicone oil
1-5 percent of calcium carbonate
0.2-1.0 percent of antioxidant
0.5-2.0 percent of antirust agent

I do want all that stuff greasing the gears and internals. I wouldn't want it in my food. I've owned several kitchenaid mixers and never had any grease escape the motor/trans housing. I think that's a unit specific defect and If it's still under warranty, I'd say double-down on KitchenAid for replacement

Unfortunately it's a part of the design as per KitchenAid. Amazing mixer otherwise.
