I bought the $160 n100 model with 16GB/512GB about a month ago. It comes with Win 11 and runs great. For use as a basic computer, I don't know why anyone would buy a normal desktop anymore.

If you plan on leaving it on all day, there are people running N100s on about 6-8w, and in some cases can be run fanless and quiet (check out the cwwk n100 4-6port network appliances), while the n95 may be closer to ~15w...Sure, that's not much but 200w/day versus twice that adds up over the course of the year or many years, especially if you are trying to minimize your baseline home electricity usage and not heat up your network closet.

I was in the market for a mini-pc to run proxmox and replace a raspberry pi 3 for home VPN duties (and VMs/containers like home assistant in the future, maybe OpnSense router, etc.) and ended up going for a fanless n100 from cwwk for about $200 (plus RAM and SSD separately).

I've heard these things can overheat. Plenty of reviews about that. They small size and the fan, especially if you're streaming from it like a Plex server can be a problem.

I use it as a basic PC and it has zero issues. I could see that if you used it as a Plex server it may have issues transcoding, but I dont see this as being a good use case for this type of PC.

kubuntu linux .... I got one of these a week ago and it's great, but you won't be able to get rid of the horizontal screen tearing in playback by tweaking the modesetting driver in openbox or other lightweight window managers.... kwin or a modern window manager *just works* ... no tearing and this thing is plenty powerful enough to run a full desktop environment .... comes with windows for install in chinese/english, can confirm no problems wiping/installing ubuntu 23.10 .... works great as a multimedia client and plays back youtube &etc on a 4k display without any dropped frames/screen tearing
I'll test out emulation soon, but I'd imagine wii/gamecube emulation would be good
IMO this thing is a steal
why not just use one . instead of ellipses everywhere.

It probably come with Windows. One Amazon review said the 16B version did. Read some of the SD threads for other Beelink minis to learn how to do a clean Windows install if desired (possible Chinese spyware).

I have Proxmox hypervisor installed on my Beelink EQ12 (Windows 11, N100, 16GB). Plex, Windows 10, Windows 11, Ubuntu, Linux Mint, MX Linux, and Debian are all installed and run fine. Proxmox is installed on a 2.5 " SATA SSD that I dual boot into.

If you put it in the kitchen, remember you need a monitor, keyboard and mouse. A tablet, phone or small laptop might be better alternatives.

How much work does it get as a plex server? This would be replacing a m-atx setup with a few tb of 1080p movies and tv that serve to iPhones, firetv, Roku, etc.

Just because the TDP is doubled doesn't mean it's going to double the power usage when it's idling. There should be virtually no difference unless it's running at 100% usage all the time. You could also set some manual limits to get power draw to match the N100.

I've been wanting to get one of those double LAN/WAN setups for OpnSense as well. I'll have to look into it further, because everything I see is around $200 or so.

If you go shop around in aliexpress once in a blue moon you will see a good deal there. I brought this for $50 less.

Can this run a desktop version of Linux? If so, which of the common ones are best compatible with it?
I would say MX Linux is the best because it is optimized for low end hardware. I am running it in my DS920+ using as a VM giving it 1.5gb of memory with 2 virtual cpu's.
