These are good to kill small flying insects such as fruit flies and small flies. These use blue LED and not UV lamp (which is expensive). The LED lasts 3-12 months and the replacement LEDs are sold for 3 for $18. For this to be successful in removing flies, place it near the fruits etc and make sure all other lights are off. If the blue light is the sole light bugs notice, this will be very successful. I have connected it to a WiFi plug and set a timer for this to turn ON at 11
PM every night and turn off the 6 AM.

purchased this back in '17 for $26 on sale.

the replacement lamp itself is $20 so you might as well purchase a whole backup at $20

Recommended not to be used within 25-feet of area intended for human? Thoughts on that?
It attracts bugs so ya don't want em too close. I built a circle about 30feet outside the people area.

"Should not be attached to house or deck or other structures. The cord is 9" in length."

What was manufacturer thinking while making product?

Ineffective? This thing will definitely kill bugs, esp those attracted to UV light. None of these are particularly effective at killing mosquitoes as a target species. Otherwise expect some nice ZAPS!

The octenal mosquito attractant is negligible. You'll find a nice collection of dead bugs below the zapper. Mice, rats, possums, and raccoons will love the crispy insect snacks.
yes ineffective, just read the NYT article if you want more info.

how long before the lamp was bad?
Bought mine in '17 for $28. Bulb died this year after plenty of use.

my father in Florida liked this brand. said it worked good against skeeters, the other brands just didn't work well.

now he can sit on his porch in the evening. YMMV

Well from the article:

"Because of the irresistible lure of their light, bug zappers are incredibly effective at killing bugs."

The issue is that mosquitos aren't attracted to UV but instead CO2 (your breath).

That said, the unit I have came with some swatches of a bait/lure which works very well but DOES wear out/need replacing. Example of this:

But there are many different types.

I actually recently got this 4pk for $20 and they work great. They are compatible with most zappers including the flowtron brand. https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0BWJYQGKN/

So far these bulbs are pretty good, I've had one plugged in constantly for over a month and they are holding up pretty well.

This is a good price for the lamp. I agree with everyone on here that said this is good for bugs and flies only, not so much for mosquitos.

You will need to get the Octenol lures: https://www.amazon.com/Hodiax-Attractant-Cartridge-Mosquito-Universal/dp/B09ZHKQ5WT/ref=sr_1_1_sspa?... [amazon.com]

Best bet is to spray your yard. I sprayed for 4 weeks straight and mosquitos be gone!

Maybe you should re-read the article. The article states it's very effective at killing bugs, just not targeting mosquitoes—which is exactly what I said.

I use one of these occasionally inside my home. Like in fall when you get Asian Ladybeetles inside your home, or if you leave the doors open too long in the summer and get flies in the house. Turn it on at night when going to bed, put a tray under it, and by morning you'll usually be rid of any flying insects in your home.

My kids tend to leave doors open and I got tired of all sorts of bugs in the house so I bought a different model (same concept) and have it on a smart switch programmed to come on at night.
