This uses a 12v DC input, meaning it has a external power brick. Not sure I've seen that for a full size video disc player before.

Also note that it only has a single HDMI output, which could be a limitation if you use an older AV receiver. Many UHD blu ray players have dual HDMI outputs so that you can send the full UHD HDR signal directly to the TV, and the full quality digital audio output separately to a receiver that might not be able to pass through or process the 4K HDR.
if you have a Samsung tv Dolby vision is irrelevant
Yes. Its' sad.
Streaming has yet to match the audio and video quality of physical media.
Video to some extent may be okay, but audio is just garbage from streaming compared to physical media.

Redbox is slowly closing shop. Sad. They no longer are getting good new releases and many kiosks are disappearing.

I've been looking for a good 4K player with affordable price, too many of these cheep units fail some 4K disks and cause skipping. The Sony low end is one of the worst, checking different audio forums, it's HELL out there. I am trying the PC M-Disk blu ray drive route for an older PC setup. All the steps needed in this direction is not easy. But I can play my 4K disks and send too the receiver and play on projector. Still no Dolby due too video card limitations. ( had a disk have a layer pressing issue and BESTBUY would not let me exchange it out, contacted Disney the mfg and they said they are no longer doing bad disks replacements ) Hopefully the higher end units come down too an affordable price as no mfg is making new models.

Where do people buy or rent discs nowadays? I would like to watch movies on blu-ray but don't want piles of plastic discs building up in my apt.

What do people do with them?

I would suggest looking at Panasonic's 420 player. Great player for all there formats and no manual DV switching like Sony.
If you need it now Amazon has it for $69 more than this, easily worth it over this IMO.

People often argue that it lacks DV.
With the HCX processor it often negates much of the difference especially for around double the cost.

I agree with your Sony option, had the 700 & 800 and had those issues also and that darn manual switching got old quick!

I've had the 820 & 420 for nearly 2 years with no issues and they are the best players to boot IMO.

Anyone know if this (or any) DVD/BR player will start playing the movie without needing to navigate the menus? My father-in-law with Alzheimers watches movies all day (he has 1000's of DVD's) and he can change discs but can't figure out the remotes or the menus. It's be nice to just pop in a disc and have it start playing the movie.

I don't have brain disease (yet), and I have difficulty figuring out the remotes and the menus!

Good luck to you and your father-in-law--our family is living with brain disease as well.

why and how is this a good deal?

because the Panasonic has HDR10+ over the Sony UBP-X700M?
the sony only supports HDR10 but the sony also supports Dolby Digital TrueHD /DTS.

well the Panasonic is cheaper, but not by much.
the sony is constantly on sale for ~$178.

what about Dolby Atmos, Dolby Vision?

Conclusion.
Not a good deal
Some of the Sony players freeze during playback of 4K discs. The unfortunate reality is if you want a ~$150 4K Blu-ray player, you pretty much have to choose between reliability and Dolby Vision.

As you know, it's tough. Just to be able to have him control his own movie watching by just changing discs would be invaluable. Not sure something exists to remove the annoying menus, etc., from the DVD discs, but there is hope. Our current Panasonic player has an option that sounds like that's what it is supposed to do, but it's enabled and doesn't do anything to bypass menus.

I personally still see a huge benefit of physical discs. I own many 4k digital movies, so i am not against them at all. I also am not bothered by the "reduced quality" of a stream. for me it is way easier to put the disc in and press play. if netflix removes a movie you like or vudu goes out of business, how will you watch the movie you want to watch? i do not trust that 20 years from now these services will still be hosting the content i paid for. If you are 20 years old and reading this and think i am crazy for thinking 20 years is a long time...it's not lol.

it is also a lot easier for my daughter. she doesnt have to scroll through 10 different apps finding what she wants. she wants to watch harry potter, she puts in in the player and its done. Note the first HP movie came out over 20 years ago haha.

No wifi and no Dolby Vision support are probably why this is so cheap. I think I'll pass.

Never understood why you would need wifi on a physical media player?
