Worth keeping in mind (and ignoring all haughty nerd blowback) that pretty much every UHD player from expensive to very expensive still has intermittent playback issues because of the fragility of UHD disc media. The UHD players built into Xbox and PS5 systems continue to perform approximately as well, with or without edge case features that most normal UHD enthusiasts don't use or need.

And any hardcore home theater owner has an HTPC with a UHD drive connected, anyway.

Isn't UHD playback in Windows crippled on newer hardware? Support for UHD playback on PC is almost completely wiped since 10th or 11th gen intel if my memory serves me. Dedicated players are still needed in todays market for now. I cannot stand playback quality on most streaming services due to bandwidth limitations and have dedicated players on most of my 4K sets at home (Series X, One X and an LG UBKM9 dedicated player)

I'm both audiophile and HTPC nerd, just now making the end-to-end upgrade on my main HT to 4k UHD. Streaming quality is rather poor and is only going to degrade as I upgrade. I have a small collection of 4K UHD discs that I would like to play instead of just getting the remux rips.
I have zero need for consoles, but just like the BDP in the PS3, they seem to be reliable media players. Do both current gen consoles support Dolby Vision?
A functional USB-C 4K UHD disc drive would be great, but if Windows is going to ruin the experience I would rather add a dedicated player to my stack.

For your use case I would recommend the panasonic dp-ub820. Yes its ,more expensive, but it is a much better player and is pretty much future proof.

Its been on sale recently for $350.

Uhd 4k discs must be scrupulously clean. Of the 200 plus uhd discs I currently own, only one has had a physical defect. Inspect the disc and wipe it with a lens cloth before loading.

Btw always wipe down the face of the disc, never around.

This is good advice; but there are reports of incompatibility that has to do with layer transitions, encoding of specific media titles, and so on that apply equally to users of specific discs in combination with specific players -- all over the map.

Is the UB420 worth the additional $60-$70 over this ?
