4 lines $100 + tax x 24 months = ~ $3,000
+ 4 iphones for trade in = ~ 800
Total = $3,800

Price of 4 iPhones 15 = $830 x 4 = $3,320
Price of Service for 2 yeas = ~ 480 = 20 a month = $5 per line
Be sure to check but I think essentials plan does not include taxes and fees. It says 4--38% for taxes!!! That means up to about $45/month in Taxes. I couldn't see anything about eligible phones except the blurb for iPhone 11 trade is enough for a free iPhone 15 and the iPhone 7 is only valued at about $415 off, so probably other models are somewhere in between.

More details needed!
I can confirm that essentials price does not include taxes and fees. For 6 lines in NC taxes and fees is about 28$ total.

Yes, trade in needed. Yes, "free" phones via 24 mo credits. Yes, $35 activation fee. Yes, high speed limited to 50gb, Yes, no unlimited hotspots.
i'm not that familiar with the Essentials plan but it seems like a reasonable way to get free phones every 2 years.

I wonder if existing essentials customers can get phone deals out of this? I'm guessing not.

Buy iphone 14s.. really not much of a difference. Get Mint Mobile if you are not heavy data user.

T-mobile needs to go back to their non-greedy base when Legere started first Uncarrier. They are as big of crooks right now as they other ones are.

Is the lowest value trade in to get an iPhone 15 .. the iPhone 11? It's very unclear.

What trade in are you using in this math?

According to the fine print, iPhone XR.

Quote from tmobile.com :
Qualifying credit, service, & trade-in (e.g., save $830: iPhone XR) required.
Interesting twist Tmo... But it looks like you have to sign up for 4 NEW lines...

To avoid the DCC, and probably get a few other perks (possibly Costco GCs?), I'd consider activating at Costco for this deal if your local Costco has a Tmo kiosk. I mean, even if you don't have a Costco membership, you'd absolutely offset the $140 in DCC charges ($35x4).

Interesting! Does this include upfront taxes on the phone? Just to compare, I did the same math on the recent verizon plan that requires no trade ins, matching the 24 month period for apples to apples comparison.

Verizon deal:
4 lines $120 + tax x 24 months = ~ $3,600
Taxes on 4 phones = $200
Lost statement credits for 12 months, $23 x 4 x 12 = ~$1,100
Residual value of iphone 14 plus after 2 years, ~ $300 x 4 = $1200

Total cost = $3,700

Price of 4 iphone 14 plus = $3,320
Price of Service for 2 years = $380 = $15.83 a month = $3.96 per line.

*with verizon fios, you're actually making money.
------------------------------------

here's another way of looking at it, since people often compare to buying an unlocked phone and using cheaper NVMOs.
4 lines $120 + tax x 24 months = ~ $3,600
Taxes on 4 phones = $200
Lost statement credits for 12 months, $23 x 4 x 12 = ~$1,100

Total cost to own phone + 2 years of service = $4,900

Cost of service with MVNO - $100 x 24 = $2400
total cost for 4x iphone 14 = $2500, $625 per phone (including tax).

This isn't the slickest deal, except for verizon fios customers who get an extra $5 off each line, making the phones only $487 each including tax.

I have an old plan that's $100/month for 4 lines and can add additional lines up to 10 total at $10 each - could I switch to this plan and get the 'free' iphones? This essentials plan seems about on par with what I have now.

Not sure if you can just upgrade to this plan but, usually, for t-mobile, if you're upgrading your existing plan to another one, any perks that you got for your existing plan will be removed.. let's say you acquired 2 free lines in the previous promotion, they will no longer be free anymore after you moved. I'm not sure if it's still the case but it's what i have been told before when I tried to upgrade my plan.

Not really $100. This is pre-tax quote. Tax is non-neglectable.
