Yep, 8 years old, released in 2015. I think people would be much better served by the Ecobee that is also sold at Costco. Th air quality sensor is really useful. It also comes with a power extender kit for anyone without a C wire, whereas the Nest relies on charging its internal battery only when running the fan (so it can unexpectedly die during temperate weather).
I've had 10 of these installed in apartments I own for 7 years with no issues. Maybe you just got a dud but mine have been flawless used daily for heat/ac.
This is a newer model, but I've had a 1st gen since 2013 with zero issues.

These die on you. I used it and it went blank in less than two years. Google support will only replace it if it is within warranty, otherwise it is ~$200 down the drain.
I now use the Amazon thermostat, blends great with the Ring home security ecosystem.
These little dials sure are pretty but not the quality that you expect in a $200 thermostat.

You know I had mine go out slightly after warranty and I worked on it with live support online and after some trial and error I gave them the sixth degree about how a thermostat should last longer than 2 years. At first they did not want to give me a replacement, but I did not give up. They sent me a new unit. I was only slightly out of warranty though and I used that to facilitate my argument. I think they just didn't want to deal with me because I was very insistent. I basically told them the unit was junk. I think if I had to go through it all again, I would not get a learning thermostat but just the regular one, and perhaps check the reliability on those thermostats

Your gas company might provide better deals. Mass save does these for $100 not sure if it's all the time. I've been using the same one for over 4 years without a problem.

For what it's worth...

If you use Orange and Rockland for your energy, you can get a seriously slick deal on these (and many other) thermostats. I just got this for $5.

Obviously it's YMMV, but maybe your energy provider offers similar instant rebates. Worth checking out.

The link I used for reference is https://ny.home.myorustore.com

Is this the one with the rotating bezel? I like these because they look so much better than ecobee. Plus the rotating bezel makes it more fun to use.

Sounds like you never had to deal with Google. We are not talking about android or app problems, this is Google hardware. I had one die on me and it was more than 5 years old, no warranty, they wouldn't replace which I understand.
I have 3 of these. Two came with the house after 1 died, I ordered 2 from my electric company for $50 each, no brainer.
One works like a champ, the other recently stopped connecting to my wifi after I changed networks. It wouldn't find any network at all despite me having several here. I called Google, maybe I got lucky with a rep who really cares or maybe I have higher social score 🤔 but she was a delight. She said this one is almost out of warranty too but they will replace with new one, however it won't extend warranty. Perfectly fine. They put $250 hold on the card and sent me a new one, when I mail old one back they will release the hold. They also offered me option to send it first with no credit hold.
I received it exactly 2 days later and will set up. Some people had same problem with replacement units too, seems like wifi chip in these fry after a while for some reason.
I never thought Google would have support like this. Now I consider buying Pixel phone in the future.
