I believe this is as low as I've ever seen this Pica pencil. I have one of these, they're very nice - leave nice crisp pencil marks and the integrated sharpener works very well.

About this item
  • Marks and writes on all surfaces including dusty, raw, oily, wet and dark surfaces
  • Sharpener built into the front of the cap
  • Convenient quiver cap with special clip
  • Water-soluble and water jet resistant refill leads are available in different colors
  • Diameter of leads 2.8 mm - Automatic lead support - stainless steel tube
  • Made in Germany

Is this John Wicks choice of pencil? I'm in for one if it is.

I use this pencil for woodworking on almost a daily basis for about 2 years now and still haven't burned through a 10 pack refill yet, still have 3 sticks left in the pack. The thick graphite doesn't break easily and lasts quite a bit, but there are plenty of off brands on Amazon if you somehow are burning through the sticks too fast.

Would this item be good for marking prices on used goods for sale at the flea market?

Sometimes people complain that a Sharpie marker is too permanent.

is that the same exact pencil or is that a mini version? if not i would agree that is a more attractive purchase
perhaps its just the image that is squished and cajas mini refers to something else

It's the exact same pencil, the 3030. Another poster linked to another kit too that is called the 4030 so perhaps the leads are shorter in this pack.

edit: the 4050 is hardness H and for fine lines

the 4030 is hardness SB2 and multi use

How is this better than using a mechanical pencil?

Looks just like a lead holder that I already have for drafting. I guess the only good thing about it is the sharpener is built in to the cap

It's the perfect marking instrument. Far superior to a carpenter pencil in every way. Very fine tip allows for precise markings and the thin shank allows it to fit into recessed holes on shelving, coat hooks, TV mounts, etc. Sharpener is built into the sheath. I have one in my DIY toolbag and it will never leave. Had it for over a year and haven't burnt thru the first stick of graphite yet. Buy with confidence.

Conversely that does create the one down side that I've run into with these, the thicker lead can't fit into the hole of a lot of squares and other tools for scribing. Gotta keep a standard mechanical around for that.

FYI takes a 2.8mm diameter lead refill though not sure about length. Anyone have experience with the off brand refills? I know the Germans make a good pencil lead, but are they worth the premium?
Generics I've tried from AMZN are garbage. They break easily, and if they get damp (just high humidity level damp), they stick in the pencil barrel and won't advance when needed. The colored leads (yellow, red, white) are even worse, though I suspect that is partly due to the "crayon" nature of material required to make colored leads.

Having said that... the Pica refills that come in a large pack have been similarly brittle. Same for Hultafors refills (a high end Euro tool brand). The ONLY "refills" I've had consistently good luck with are the 2 Pica leads that come with the pencil itself. Of course, that makes for expensive refills when you have to buy a whole new pencil just to get them. I've tried to address issues with Pica, but that was a waste of time.

I've got a couple of these with different lead or crayon for marking different types of surfaces. Love it for precise marking.

Most people may not need this kind of marking but for precision work, I enjoy this tool.

I know this is NOT the same quality as the Pica, but has anyone had any experience with these at 4 pencils and replacement leads for $17 [amazon.com]?

Here's a review that compares it to the Pica

Before purchasing these pencils I used the Pica but I lost it and needed a replacement. I thought I'd save some money on this brand but here are my gripes.

1. Lead was considerably softer than the Pica brand and kept me changing out the lead.

2. Because of the lead situation I switched the original lead replacements with the Pica brand. I thought it would work out but no the kept falling through the opening of the pencil.

3. The holster for the pencil doesn't grip the pencil tight enough and comes out quite often at the slightest friction.

4. The sharpener at the top of the pencil also comes out so easily. And I'm constantly picking it up off the ground and lost one already.

Thanks for reading the reviews, I was apparently too lazy, or at least not in a review-reading mindset LMAO.

And I'm not being sarcastic, for real, thank you and repped!

I have MANY pencils, mechanical and otherwise, with many different lead types and sizes. I'm even down to my last half-dozen Paramount Diamond Drawing No. 5055 3H from (I think) the 50s or 60s which I got a bunch of boxes of when I bought a crapload of art supplies in a giant metal set of drawers for $20 in the late 80s. I use the various pencils and lead holders for art, woodworking, foam crafting (I'm almost done with a reverse bear trap from Saw because my daughter is obsessed), etc., but every different type has a different purpose. The point (HA, get it? Point, pencils, do you get it...oh, never mind) is, I guess I'm going to try the Pica.
