I'm not a gamer, but this appears to be a decent deal on a laptop for "regular" people needing a good laptop at a decent price including the Costco Concierge two year warranty adding a year to the manufacturer.
I bought one would like to see the "experts" here either approve, tear it up or comment on the good and the bad.

There is very little about this unit out there. Nobody I can find has commented on the quality of the various components. The i5 chipset itself appears to be decent all things considered for regular people going on the web and running Windows Office and some specific programs like Photoshop or video editing etc. Those are my uses...
It appears to have been out since early 2023 as a specific unit. In my limited research, I'm finding similar units all running around $100 to $150 bucks more and not 17.3 inch screen. It does have a back lit keyboard and a few other things I like. I do know that sometimes companies will make a model for Costco and throw something "extra" in they might not put on units generally available or sent out. It might be the i5 chip vs an i3 in this one and backlit keyboard or not. I am aware of how some i5's might be better than an i7 or substantially worse etc. in how they compare and vs Ryzen chipsets.
So, Feel free to critique. I can take this back and will if the general consensus is that this is NOT necessarily a good deal or someone shows me something better for my non-gamer use at a decent price.

Uh...250 nits screen is very standard for this price range...not sure why people are complaining about that. Though, this is slick deals after all. People will complain about anything.
That said, this will most likely be lower on black friday.
I missed that. Glad you pointed it out.
Yup. Big screen, relatively low resolution, and in this case it's garbage.
It's not 2010 any more....

Thanks, good point. I'd rather have one in my hand and take it back to get the better price than run down and they are gone. So odd, is that my old HP has like fixed itself for the problem (hanging up on text and clicks).
I noticed apparently a LOT of stock in stores of this... It is a system wide (national discount) but a lot of times with Costco, will allow the managers to do a discount if they are wanting to get rid of them. When you see the price with a .00 cents after the main price that is their last markdown then they are gone. I'm going to keep my eyes open for Black Friday type discounts AND other deals. The one I'm on now was a deal I found and posted that had like a thousand replies here a few years ago from Walmart it was such a good deal.

Nice that it comes with 16 GB by default, and it's one to watch if you're into 17.3" laptops.
But also I'd criticize the connectivity options, which will limit this computers future proof ness. Specifically:
- no Thunderbolt 4 on the USB-C port
- HDMI 1.4 is very outdated by today's standards
- Not Wifi 6E and it's 1x1
- 720p webcam is outdated
Also 512 GB doesn't feel like enough storage these days imo.
The USB 3.0 ports are also a slight bummer, especially when the USB-C 3.0 port doesn't support video out (in case you need to hook an external display, those are handy, although if you know HDMI suffice then it would be fine too).
41Wh battery is tiny in a 17" laptop. My 13" laptop has close to 60Wh. Intel 12 and 13 gen (not a big difference between the two) are battery hogs because the processor alone can easily go up to 60+ W. Wouldn't be a problem if you don't need mobility much.
In general some dealbreakers and some compromises. I kind of expected more for $500, but then 17.3" screens are not as easy to find as 15.6 or 14" screens.
Edit: Just to add after seeing the previous comment: I don't consider HDMI 1.4 a problem. A $500 laptop isn't going to have every single latest technology. Corner will be cut somewhere. The most important thing is to find the corners cut in the right places where you don't care. And HDMI 1.4 is perfectly fine for most (unless you specifically care about 4K60 external displays). No WiFi 6e is fine too (it does have WiFi 6), a little slower but not unusable. You can't expect to spend $500 to futureproof yourself for 10 years. SSD can be easily and cheaply swapped in most cases. 2TB Crucial P5 Plus is $90 somewhere.
But the color space of the screen will make it very unpleasant because whatever you edit on the screen may not look right on a different screen.
Mine was only $250 because it was the HDD version and only came with 8g ram, it required upgrading to ssd and 16gb ram just to make it useable, slow as molasses with a hdd.
If you're really looking for a cheap 17.3 it's ok once upgraded but I wouldn't pay 500 for this version.
The only advantage this model seems to have over the hdd version is the keyboard isn't silver. Silver keyboard is hard to see the keys on, had to add a kb skin so I could see the keys.
One thing I do like about these model hp 17.3 is the overall size and weight of the laptop has been shrunk to be more comparable to 15.6 laptops than older 17.3. It's a nicely portable 17.3 with the frame and bezels shrunk down. It's the same depth as my old 15.6 laptop and less than 1" wider.
