Edit: I should say their first Pixel branded fully in house design was the Pixel c. Nexus were co-developed with other companies (actually the other company handled designing and manufacturing, so you can barely call it developed by them).
This tablet as others pointed out, will get 3 Android upgrades and 2 more years of security updates after. A little overpriced considering Apple supports their tablet for much longer. The iPad Air 2 from 2014 is still receiving iPadOS 15 security updates for another year.
I do wish the dock would work standalone. UI is pretty simple though iPad and Samsung have better multitasking implementation.
I feel like $300-$350 be more reasonable price. The nest hub max is $130rn and functions better than this since half the time it asks me to setup hub mode after I've done it a dozen times....
Since Ipad 9th is $190-250 with more powerful cpu but half the storage
128gb is a good starting size
A tough bite when weaker mediatek tablets and windows tab are $100-150

In order to establish this "codependent while also remaining somewhat independent" relationship between the devices that you're imagining it's even MORE expensive than what I described.
As the tablet is not gaining a large user base there's little hope for a 3rd-party solution so far.
You need the kind of logic I described in order to make this all work seamlessly.
Otherwise, they could have simply connected the speaker to a Bluetooth receiver and made it so that's the only device it can connect to for audio while it's docked.
However, the audio wouldn't sound as good and you're still in the same boat of having to monitor whether it's docked or not (the method of doing so really doesn't matter).

They wouldn't be able to price it anywhere near in line with those "cheap" Nest speakers you're referring to, simply because it would cause overlap in their product line. You'd also have people buying this for the tablet and selling the dock by itself if they made this into a full fledged smart speaker.
However, if the Nest speakers are so cheap, why don't you just buy one and put it beside this?
You might even be able to set up a Tasker or Google Assistant task to handle the audio handoff.
And my point from the beginning: I would be interested in this product if the speakers would work independently from the tablet, like a nest speaker would. They didn't make that device, so I'm not interested.

We (people in SlickDeals) make decisions like that one left and right. I don't see anything wrong with stating why I'm abstaining from purchasing a product listed on sale. I hope that other buyers that may be more familiar with a product would do the same for me.
